There will be 63 floors of office space capped by an indoor observation deck, a restaurant above that, and a vent space on top. The glass tower has a twisted shape which designers say is meant to echo the Statue of Liberty in New York Harbor.
I wish there was more of a memorial aspect to the design that that. Maybe there is, but the article didn't cover it. I don't know.

And, agreed, the name's gotta go.

As a NYer, I like it. Though I would have included TWO spires climbing up to 1776 ft. It's just a visual thing - I really miss the old Twin Towers.

From the artist's rendering, the new tower looks like it's 4000 ft. tall compared to the rest of the skyline. The rendering is a bit exaggerated IMO, but I like it.

It looks really nice, the name is stupid though.

What will happen when a plane hits a all glass building?

I'm kind of on the whole glass tower thing. Shouldn't we be trying to build a tower that's harder to blow up rather than one that's easier?

Heck, the old WTC survived an earlier bombing attempt a few years before 9/11 - it took the terrorists a few tries before they were able to bring it down. A glass tower would go down in a heartbeat.

It sure would give me the willies if I had to work in there...

Ticking sound coming from a .pkg package? Don't let the .bom go off! Inspect it first with Pacifist. Macworld - five mice!

It's all right, the workers will be instructed not to throw stones, and all stones within a stones throw of the new tower will be seized by local authorities.

Very mature... ugh You should have left it up so the rest of us could make fun of him...

FYI, this building is going to be the largest building in the world by a solid 300 feet.

1776 Feet with an extra "hat" that will make it over 2000+ feet...

Technically, the Petronas Towers have a "hat" on top to make them larger then the Sears tower. The highest" office space is still in the Sears tower.

A "hat" being a non livable decorative antenna.

1. Petronas Towers (Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia) - 1,483 ft (452 m)
2. Sears Tower (Chicago, USA) - 1,454 ft (443 m)
3. Jin Mao Building (Shanghai, China) - 1,379 ft (420 m)
4. Empire State Building (New York City, USA) - 1,250 ft (381 m)
5. Central Plaza (Hong Kong, China) - 1,227 ft (374 m)
6. Bank of China (Hong Kong, China) - 1,209 ft (369 m)
7. Emirates Towers (Dubai, UAE) - 1,149 ft (350 m)
8. The Centre (Hong Kong, China) - 1,149 ft (350 m)
8. T&C Tower (Kaohsiung, Taiwan) - 1,140 ft (347 m)
10. Amoco Building (Chicago, USA) - 1,136 ft (344 m)

I think they should have thought about the name a bit more. "Freedom Tower" seems so commercial. I would rather have the name of the developers rather then "Freedom". Perhaps "Independence" or even "Liberty".

Why not, oh I don't know, the "World Trade Center"?

I know, call me crazy, but perhaps we don't have to beat people over the head with the "Freedom" BS and instead call it like it is - assuming it will again be a World Trade Center.

Honestly, I think the observation deck/memorial area is a good idea and all, but let's not go crazy on naming the damn thing. Next thing you know it'll be changed from "Freedom" to "War on Terror Tower"
If after 6 months no WMD are found, people who supported the war should say ["You're right, we were wrong -- good job"] -- and move to impeach Mr. Bush."

I agree with this. This name has GOT TO GO!!! The NEW World Trade Center would have been a better name. People would probably say that that name is not good because it reminds them too much of the WTC well It's a lot better name than Freedom Tower.

"The Tower Tower"????

Uh, no.

The inimitable American sense for pathos will probably push through, and the building will suffer the atrocious name "Freedom Tower" after all.

However, a counterargument:

There is already an identically stupidly-named building in Miami, Florida:

If they go through on naming it "freedom tower", I'm going to call it French Tower.

The way Americans pick their government, yeah, it's possible. That's the scary thing.

Then again, you have to wonder why it is we live so close to the US border. What is it that we keep in the north, along the tundra?
