Today we're releasing the OS X universal binary patch for Warcraft III. It is available as an automatic patch by connecting to battle.net.

Awesome!! I just recently started playing this again on my MacBook. Thanks for maintaining such a great game and ensuring that it runs as well as it can on today's hardware.

If I were a woman, I would hang a picture of the Blizzard Mac development team on the wall and swoon.

Hell, I might just do that anyway...

its just another reason as to why blizzard are the best game developers.
add it to the list

I somehow doubt the ****ers at EA would do this kind of stuff.

Wow (NOT meaning World Of Warcraft!)! I had stopped playing when I sold my Mac mini and got a MacBook. I wanted to play Warcraft III ever since, but hestitated to buy the Windows version. Lucky me – now I'm playing it on my 22" 1680 x 1050 screen with everything maxed out and it runns beautifully! Kudos to Blizzard!

You can. This new version runs a Universal app so it runs natively on Intel Macs and not via Rosetta.

My w3 cd won't install on my mbp, so i cant even try to install the patch.

would i be able to do the following?
1) install w3 using a pc onto an external hdd
2) Run patch 1.21
3) Play w3 off the external hdd using the mbp?

cheers,

It should, as it is universal now if you download the patch.

No. It sounds like you have a PC only version of the disk. You need to have the legitimate hybrid CD and install the mac version on your mbp and then update with the patch.

AFAIK, all WCIII disks should be hybrid as it was a simultaneous release for PCs and Macs. The MBPs however seem to be a bit picky about disks.

I believe some "value" versions of WCIII may have been PC only. If the disk jewel case does not mention the mac version or have the CD key for the mac version, then it is not a hybrid disk because the PC and Mac versions have different CD keys.

With this universal binary version, I was able to play at the full res of my new monitor (1920X1200) with a sustained FPS of round 50 on my 1.8Ghz MBP.

Rob,

Although performance is great with this new patch, it kills my Macbook Pro's battery in about 5 minutes. This is strange since on a full charge I can enjoy 90 minutes or so of World of Warcraft before having to plug back in.

I hope you guys can fix this as it currently renders the game unplayable on my daily commutes.

Bob
