The test result vary too much, depending on the server you're using, to give you any meaningful idea about your connection speed. Mine range from very fast (Chicago) to mediocre (New York) which would be my closest city.

2878kbps down / 461kbps up via the D.C. server. But 2881 down / 448 up via Seattle. That's not bad for me (I'm on 3Mb Sprint DSL, with supposed pegged 512 uplink). As Mastrap mentioned, you need to use several servers to test, and it depends also on the time of day, load on the test server, etc. There's lots of servers to test speed listed at www.dslreports.com.

I get pretty consistent results from that site.

4723 down, 353 up. Sunday mornings are the best for downloading around here, as I have the node all to myself.

SBC DSL rated at "up to" 3Mbps down and 384kbps up:
2504 kbps down
412 kbps up

Make sure you use the test site closest to you, or Internet traffic stupidity can give you a lower number than you really deserve.

You can also contrast test results from different test systems. Here's SBC's speed test site for comparison to Speakeasy's. I got Download = 2.526 Mbps, Upload = 440.57 kbps on this site (using the same test site city, of course).

Those transfer rates sound pretty accurate to me. I would have guessed 400 down and 40 up just going from experience.

Using the Washington DC server I got:
Download Speed: 6779 kbps (847.4 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 2108 kbps (263.5 KB/sec transfer rate)

The down is pretty close, but I have seen downloads at 1.2mb/s and the up is way off since I can upload just under a megabyte/s

edit: doing the same test over left my download speed the same but changed my upload to 650k/s, much better.

interestingly I was watching menumeters during the test and it said a solid 900k/s down even though the test only reported 850.

U 377

That's trans-Atlantic from a house with DSL through crap year 1910 installed cables and a first generation Airport base station being actively sabotaged by the magnetic field from the clothes dryer.

I'll post some better numbers from work, through paranoid security configurations for comparison, later

My results from Adelphia's Speed test (speedtest.adelphia.net)

Your Download Results
Your Results 7232.728 Kbps

Your Upload Results
Your Results 1214.68 Kbps

I am paying for 6MB/768K and am capped at 7.2MB/1.2MB i believe, my results aren't usually as good on other sites, avg. 6/800 or so

Your download speed : 1931491 bps, or 1886 kbps.
A 235.7 KB/sec transfer rate.
Your upload speed : 360127 bps, or 351 kbps.

Off DSLR.

Considering my line's supposed to be a 4/384, the speed tests surprise me. I can hit the full 4 down by having several downloads going at once, but meh.
