But since I'm waiting for a new credit card (old account number got nicked), apparently I can't update the apps I already paid for.

They really should notify you in advance when your card will no longer work. Amazon does.

If your credit card is borked, does Amazon freeze your Kindle library?

So, did you know your card was compromised and notified the card company, or did they tell you? Either way, an iTunes account has to have a valid payment method on file or it won't work. Expired, locked, whatever, they lock the account until it's fixed. Had that happen once when I didn't update my account to show a new expiration date for my card...

How long until you get your new card? It's unlikely that you'll "lose out" on updates while you're waiting.

Just give Apple a valid CC and you'll be good.

Slightly OT, but I've often wondered why a password is required for free updates. Somewhat of an annoyance.

It's nothing compared to the constant updating of the Terms of Service which you must Accept. That happens almost every time I update, which must be once every one or two months.

My guess is that Apple doesn't actually have separate download infrastructure for "free" vs. paid downloads, and that apparently includes updates.

I should have it today, so it's by no means a big deal, just really obnoxious.

As long as you don't get your credit cards jacked on a regular basis, it shouldn't' be anything more than obnoxious for a short time.

Very true.

And since I like bitching, it's really almost a feature.

You can update your apps without a cc on file... I just did it.

Open iTunes and log into your account. Where you would choose which credit card type (mastercard, visa, amex,...) there is a "none" option at the end. Choose that and save your settings.

Then when you go to update your apps, (I just did this on my iphone) it asks you to verify your account information. When it opens the screen for your card info, backspace out whatever entries are there and choose none in the card type. Tap done until you you're finally done and then update your apps.

Yes, I wondered why there is such a fuss here over cc cards. I have had an AppleID in iTunes for over 3 years now and I only had a cc in the first month. Once my account started working, I redeemed iTunes gift cards and removed my cc. One less internet store to have my cc card number.

Apple is nice enough to provide a support article for an ios app store account without a credit card.

Create an iTunes App Store account without a credit card

I just did this for a relative yesterday, even used a generic mailing address and phone number without incident.
