Well last night I just finished the last of my upgrades to my new Dual Gig Dual Mirror Tower. In all it didnt take too long and the only hold up was minor due to a screw above the ata 100 HD carrier holding it that I didnt notice at first that had to be removed before I could get the carrier out (I had read this in another post from someone but I had forgotten about it).
For the record mine shipped with an IBM Deskstar 80GB and 256MB of Samsung DDR PC2700. I ordered a 80GB seagate barracuda IV ($104) and 512MB Samsung DDR PC27000 chip ($120) from googlegear.com. I've never used them but a pc friend recommended them and they have excellent competitive pricing compared to most of the other sites I usually order from so I figured why not. So heres the specs for all that are interested:

Dual Mirror DP 2x1ghz (basic config edu purchase at Palo Alto Apple store)
768MB Samsung DDR PC2700 Ram --I will be maxing out my machine as soon as my student budget can afford it
80GB IBM Deskstar (main ata 100)
80GB Seagate Barracuda IV (slave ata 100)
60GB Maxtor (main ata 66 7200RPM-forget the model # but its about a year old...and ya I know a Maxtor...but its fast and I have never had trouble with it...plus it was free!!
Currently I have 2x Sony 19PS 19" Monitors which I'll use together on the new Tower and a Sony 15GS 15" I wish I could use for the Beige G3(that my bro broke . )I'll be keeping the G3 around as a Web Server, and Backup audio/media storage machine for now

Misc USB Peripherals I'll be using:
Epson 820 Photo Printer (needed a new usb printer to replace my Epson 800 which still works and i'll save for now)
Logitech Optical Mouse
Samsung Yepp YP-30SH 128MB Digital Audio Player
Palm m125
Griffin Powermate
Kodak DC210Plus Digital Camera via smartdisk card reader)
Belkin 4port hub
Nikon Negative Scanner (Roommates)

...and Canon ZR40 Digital Video Camera (via firewire) and various epson, infocus, and sony DLP projectors from campus for video projects and fun of course

Upgrades in the Works:
-Adding second display card or using DrBotts ADC-VGA extractor soon as I'm done transfering files off the old Beige G3( I might use the old PCI ATI Xclaim 3D+ (I'm not sure if it'll work with 10.2 but if it doesnt then the $35 adapter will work fine for now.
-Also debating whether to add a Keyspan USB 2.0 card for more usb ports since I dont want to add another hub, plus future USB 2.0 support would be nice
-Also searching for a good digital audio I/O card...possibly one from m-audio (any recommendations?)

I'm also interested to hear what everyone is doing so please post your upgrades, ideas, and mods, pics . I have some pics if anyone is interested.

well I don't have any pic but I can tell you what I upgraded, on my old Dual 500, popped in a 128 chip, along with a 512 chip to give me a total of 704MB.

I added a second HD just like yours a Seagate Baracuda IV 80 gig 7200 RPM

I upgraded the video card to a Gforce 2MX twin view with 64MB SDRAM with ADC to power my Apple 17" CRT Studio display.

A Fire wire CD burner, LaCie 12X4X32 (400 bucks two years ago)

My digital devices include.

Keyspan DMR (love it for DVDs and iTunes)
Canon PS S330 2.1 MP camera
iPod (origial 5 gig)
old Epson 740 printer
Fire wire CF card reader
A pair of CSW digital muiltimedia speakers

I feel special. Mine came with the Barracuda 80 GB drive as the stock drive. (Or is this not special?)

I'll post pics of mine soon (dual 1gig). Dual 17" flat apple panels and all. Gotta get a digital camera first. Priorities.

So far my only upgrade is a 512 meg DIMM in my dualie 867. Just got here yesterday. BIG jump over my Beige G3 (with a G4/533 upgrade from OWC).

Here are some pics:
http://homepage.mac.com/derekn/PhotoAlbum6.html

Other two albums are my old setup with the Beige and then the G4 upgrade that was done to it.

Some cool little things. When I first started up I saw the Jag screen, rumaged around the CD case and didn't see any Jag themed CDs. The software restore discs are now (finally) 10.2 discs, not 10.1.5 with Jag upgrade CDs.

If you're wondering about the retail Jag box here's the story. LOL I got it to put on my Beige. No go, it kept locking up, so I put 10.1.5 back on and just said "f*ck it". LOL Jag is designed with newer systems in mind, not old, nothing will change that. So I got the new G4. And to think I was going to wait for a dual 1.6Ghz G4 or G5. LOL What WAS I thinking??!! I love this system, LOVE it.

Here's the specs on mine for now . . .

Dual 867 MHz
1.25 GB RAM
120 GB Western Digital
60 GB IBM Deskstar
30 GB Maxtor
Combo Drive (stock)
52x Lite-On CD-RW
Radeon 9700 Pro
Apple Studio Display 17"
Apple Studio Display 15" (graphite Manta design)
Apple Pro Speakers w/iSub

Future upgrades. . . (maybe)

Dual 1 GHz (my processor card got fried in a power surge and the company that's selling me the replacement might upgrade the dual 867 card to a dual 1.25 if they're low on stock, giving me a dual 1 GHz)

Another 80 GB WD HD

That's all for now. The new processor would really put me over the top. I'm pumped about that (and crossing my fingers).

2 MDD's June 2003's.
  • Dual 1.25GZ
  • 256MB stock RAM
  • 3x512MB Kingston Value RAM
  • 4x Super Drive (from Apple)
  • 32x ComboDrive (from Apple)
  • 160GB Seagate
  • Radeon 9000Pro 64MB (from Apple)
and my system also has a 120GB Maxtor 7200RPM (OS, Appss drive)+ my 80GB from my Beige G3 since I can't get debian partitioner to work, and 3.1 installer won't make the floppies.

The second system is my moms.

  • G4 MDD 2 X 1.42 GHz
  • 1.5 GB DDR RAM
  • Pioneer DVR-107 Superdrive
  • Hitachi DVD-ROM drive
  • Seagate Barracuda 160 GB Drive
  • Seagate Barracuda 120 GB drive
  • Western Digital 80 GB drive
  • Maxtor 20 GB drive (iTunes back-up)
  • M-Audio Revolution 7.1 sound card
  • ATI Radeon 9000 video card

G5s are certainly faster, but the uber G4 was and still is the most expandable PowerMac ever.

I've owned this machine for a few months now and I'm very happy with it's performance and quiet operation. The only item I would consider upgrading at this point is the video card. I wish there were more choices!

Microsoft(yeah i know, i know) wireless mouse

Thats all of it after all that why god oh why do i still want the dual 2.5gig g5 with a brand new monitor??????? Its an addiction folks. I love my g4 tower and it is still lightning fast for what i can tell... but mmmmmm g5..... maybe i should just get out the old soldering iron and make myself a new dual 1.33 or 1.25 before i start buying new stuff

MDD dual 867mhz
768mb ram (crucial)
80gb hdd (seagate)
flashed radeon 8500

PSU/Fan Noise Kit from Apple
PCI slot fan, modded with inline resistor, to keep the radeon cool while staying quiet.
I also replaced the stock aluminum heatsink with the copper one with heat pipes used in later models. This alone got the main fan to basically never spin up.

Future upgrades:
Well, the whole point of this machine was to be my home workstation as well as a studio machine, so I'm adding a m-audio delta 1010 pci card, and another ide or (hopefully) scsi drive.

I still love my 2 year old G4. I havent done up upgrade since last december, when I added a 80GB Seagate Barracuda V. System still runs great, and I havent even thought of buying a new system after 2 years.

MDD Dual 867
256 x 2 (Original Apple, plus another 256 apple stick) + 512 Micron= 1GB
80GB Seagate Barracuda V (Used as main system drive)
60GB IBM Deskstar (Original system drive, now used as storage)
Logitech MX 300 Mouse
Apple Power Supply Replacement Kit.

I was thinking of putting more memory in, but is it really necessary to have more than 1GB if I'm not doing hardcore photo or video editing?

Here's mine...

DP 500Mhz (original G4 dual)
1GB RAM
Original radeon card
New Power Supply (after original died)
New Internal Battery (after original died)
80GB Hard Drive (after original died)
New CD drive (after both DVD-RAM, and a replacement DVD-RW died)

I'm giving up on my baby, she's dying. Even after a fresh install of panther, she's still acting up

I guess there is not a lot more I can do, short of gutting her and starting again...

deanza4now and powermacman: How do you guys like the m-audio sound card? Where did you get it? Any other comments on it.

treebark7182: What is an Attic fan? While I understand what you said, is there any chance you can post a pic of this?

Oh yea, and I forgot to mention my bus powered Zip 100 drive.

SSharon-

I bought the M-Audio card soon after they were released at a Comp USA for retail price.

I bought some refurbished Klipsch 4.1 speakers and have been happy enough with the set-up. It's an analog set-up, not digital. I am no audiophile, but I wanted something better than most computer set-up. I listen to classical, jazz, and 80s era fusion and progressive rock. I usually listen using iTunes, but will put in the original CD if I want the best sound possible. The speakers are plenty powerful for the small living room where my computer and speakers reside. There were some early issues with the drivers from M-Audio, but they are fine now. DVDs sound really nice too, but I don't watch DVDs that often on the PowerMac.

There aren't many alternatives to this card that I know of. I would look around, you can probably get it at a discounted price now that it has been out for more than a year.
