What is the possibility of getting rid of an engraving on an iPod Mini/Nano 2G? They share the same coloured metal case, as well as an engraving that looks like it's actually white paint.

I wanted to ask here before I go hunting around some departments at edit to give me suggestions. :-P

It's laser engraved.

Other than grinding it off (and removing the anodized color layer in the process), there's nothing you can do.

I don't know if it's possible without engraving ugly whiteish blocks over the current engraving.

Edit: What Analogika said.

Well, you could probably go to a jeweler that does engravings and just have them scratch it out for a small fee. It might look kind of nasty though.

Why does the engraving appear like it's white paint, then? The metal can't be white underneath.

Do they coat it with something after the actual laser procedure?

I think the laser is just removing the polished outer layer of the aluminum. It's not paint, though.

why not just get a very steady tool and fill the engravings in with aluminum?

On my wife's new Nano 2G it looks like the engraving is filled with white material to make it stand out better. Not the aluminum showing through, but something like white paint.

Since the engraving is indeed engraved the only way to remove it is to engrave around it and basically produce some sort of etched block. Which will look like poo when you're done. The point of the engraving for a lot of people is that it's both custom AND permanent-without making the removal of the engraving utterly obvious.

What embarrassing phrase must Tomchu's iPod have engraved on it?

"The natural progress of things is for liberty to yield and government to gain ground." TJ

an opaque case should cover up that problem without scratching it up, unless you plan to re-gift it to someone else.
