When a program exits, is all the memory it used freed, or only the things it frees explicitly?

The kernel reclaims all the memory it allocated to the program.

Even though the kernel reclaims all memory allocated to the program, it's still considered good programming for your program to shut down cleanly. You want to make sure you don't have any files open, have saved/discarded data modifications, etc. before going home for the night.
