Who or what pays "community organizers"? Where does that money come from?

Never mind what they do, but who pays community organizers, typically? How much do they make? Are they compensated based on how many tax dollars they can give away or something, or based on how many people they actually help?
I guess I'm asking whether astroturf-related activity pays well, and who pays for it.

I would wager that the majority of the time, "community organizer" groups are able to pay stipends or salaries to their workers because of private foundation grants or individual donations to the organization. Typically this compensation is very low.

Frequently decided by a parent non-profit organization, or they work for nothing at all.
Community organizers typically only work for non-profits, not for profit organizations, so they don't usually make much money.
