quieter then a dual 867 g4.
louder than an imac and mini.
no. nothing can really be done.
when CPU goes to 100% all the fans on all of them kick iin and can be loud.

I'm not saying they are loud though. the G5s are pretty quiet compared to the G4s now, but the G5s are pretty quiet unless all the fans are at full speed. the G4s though can just be downright loud sometimes (read: all the time)

Liquid cooled G5 nice and quiet running at 100%, occasional rev-up and rev-down of fans, no more obtrusive than the Superdrive.
Dual G4 downright obnoxiously loud in the same way alert sirens are

I went to CompUSA last night and I had to put my ear on the computer to tell if the PMG5 was running. Of course, CompUSA has a lot of background noise but it was still impressive.

They are certainly quiet when they're not doing anything, but if you do frequent heavy lifting with them you'll prefer it under your desk instead of on it

Wouldn't you think that the single processor 1.8ghz PowerMac G5 would be the quietest PowerMac, since it should need the least amount of cooling?

A horse is a horse is a horse, of course.
That would be true if Apple didn't use the same case/cooling system across the entire line. Only reason why the single would provide a lower noise level than a dual is the lack of the second processor fan. But in a system with 9 fans, all computer controlled, being down one doesn't make that big of a difference.

Quiet power supplies are easy to get now. There's a good chance you could simply swap in a new quiet power supply and do a lot to make a G4 tower quieter. In stock form, they are roughly as loud as a wintel.
Bearings get louder with time. I just replaced the 2 CPU fans in my homebuilt dual Athlon and it made a huge difference.

Actually, I find my dual 2.5GHz machine to be a lot noisier than my dual 2.0GHz was.
On the old 2.0GHz'er, the fans didn't too frequently spin up. On the 2.5GHz machine, the fan speed chases the % of processor usage; the fans spin up (then back down) more frequently. But, at idle, its very, very quiet.

the 2.5Ghz parts are a LOT hotter than the 2.0Ghz parts also. 25% faster and a ton hotter.

Tin-cup, my 2.5 is whisper quiet, with occasional rev-ups and downs when it feels like it.
Maybe I'm the lucky one?
