i have considered many options on which system to get.

if money were to be not in the high end g5 range which g4 would be a good alternative?

I plan to use the following on a regular basis:

Photoshop
Illustrator
Macromedia Dreamweaver
Macromedia Flash
Macromedia Director
iMovie
iDvd
iPhoto
iDvd
Garageband

Also these at an amateur/may be once a week(mainy creating then rendering over night etc):

Final Cut Pro
Soundtrack
Studio Pro

i have noticed so many on ebay but i am unsure what g4 is a good one

dual 867? dual 1.0? dual 1.25? mirrored drive door?

thanks,

I would go for a 2x1.25 or 2x1.42, the last of the G4s.

If you can live with the noise, a dual 1.42 would be great. However, I'd rather save up the extra money and get a G5. It's just newer with better features. Plus you'll get a warranty.

grrrr i hate noisy machines

so i guess the g4's are out lol

my wintel annoys me so much.......like a jet engine

i would love a g5 now but the updates are playing on my mind

i am thinking of getting a mac mini with 1gb for use for the next 6-12 months and then go full blown on a nice g5 set up Oct-Dec

i could then sell the mac mini or pass it on to family/friend or just use for less intensive tasks as it consumes so much less power

what do people think of this idea?

thanks,

The MDD G4s are not loud. Not if you receive one of the final production machines or one that was the receipient of Apple's power supply exchange program.

Dual 1.25s are selling for around 12-1400 on ebay. Dual 1.42s are going for between 16-1800 right now. A brand new G5 dual 1.8 is 2000.00

Also, keep an eye on the refurb page. I got my Dual 2.0 for $2000.00 and it's been flawless.
