Al Jazeera Sets Nov.15 Launch Date For English Channel

Doha, Qatar (AHN)-The English language offshoot of popular Arab television news channel Al Jazeera announced it will start broadcasting on November 15.

In a statement released Tuesday, Al Jazeera said, "As the world's first international English-language news and current affairs channel headquartered in the Middle East, Al Jazeera International is uniquely positioned to reverse the information flow from South to North and to provide a voice to under-reported regions around the world."

Founded in 1996 and headquartered in Doha, Qatar, Al Jazeera will have broadcast centers in Kuala Lumpur, Washington and London, with English-language Al Jazeera International anticipating reaching around 80 million to 100 million households via cable and satellite.
According to the report, the launch corresponds with the 10th anniversary of the popular Arabic-language sister channel, which has attracted intense criticism from the U.S., British and Middle Eastern governments, and the new channel will work closely with it.

Having never seen Al Jazeera TV I don't know whether it is ALL politics and war or if it is news of all types, that's why I posted it here rather than in the P/L.

Like most, I have only seen the snippets of al-Jazeera when they get an exclusive interivew which the Western media does not have. My understanding is that it was founded with cash from the Emir of Qatar to specifically be independent. Most of its early staff cam from the BBC World Service and I have heard very sensible interviews with its senior people. I don't think it 'abets hatred towards the US'. It's good for 'us' (in the west) to get perhaps a different viewpoint to that to which we are normally exposed. IMHO.

They have employed several high profile British broadcasters (e.g. David Frost, Rageh Omar), who have gone on record as saying that they felt that they were being censored by their British paymasters.

It is my understanding that Al-Jazeera means "all points of view". My understanding is also that they don't mean that in a FOX News "Fair and Balanced" kind of way.

To provide American Muslims a way to get tv content which suits their wants and needs.

To allow Americans to become more familiar with Islam and Islamic points of view in hopes of achieving better understanding.

This is one possibility.

Another might be because they recognize that by providing America's Useful Idiots with only a little information (well massaged) the liberals might help deliver to the Muslims interested in world conquest, America on a platter.

Maybe one of these or some of these or all of these or none of these. Who knows?

Using your logic one might say that I have no other interests than PWL topics because that might be the only posts of mine they have seen. But I have a broad array of interests. Just as Al Jazeera might deal with news that has nothing to do with war and politics. Can you say for sure one way or the other?

But, I have no objection to the mods assigning it to the lounge they feel is best if this isn't it.

If I only saw the Reuters photo that was photoshopped I might believe ALL of Reuters' images are manipulated or of the Middle East or of War. All would be untrue.

They have honest photos of all kinds of subjects and locations. But If I didn't know how would I know?

And someone please tell us does al Jazeera offer environmental news or economic news or is it ONLY war and politics related. Tell me, what_the_heck, you seem to know better than anyone, what IS al Jazeera's content?

I used to get Al Jazeera free via Sky TV in 2002 and never really watched it. When the Iraqi war began in March 2003, I wanted to view the rawer, Arabic-centric coverage and discovered that they had changed to a subscription model and it wasn't worth the cost for me to tune in.

On NPR they said it would only be available on the Dish Network initially (at least here in North America), and that it will be a monthly charge just to add that channel. Speculation was that it would cater to people from the Middle East, or with family in there. A spokesman from Al Jazeera claimed that they wanted to expand their product out to a worldwide audience; that they'd tapped all their existing market. He said that westerners have only been exposed to news agencies from the outside, looking in -- and that this would be a perspective from the inside.

I can't see how this could be a bad thing, but Bill O'Reilly is already talking about protesting any advertisers that buy time on the network. Probably because it won't be Fair and Balanced...

This should probably be in the PWL, IMHO. It has all the trappings and actors in place.

Anyone want to wager on how long it takes for a boycott of Dish Network to start?

It has been mine as well. Being an English speaker natively, Latin-based vocabulary and Germanic sentence structure come most naturally to me.

Still waay too lazy. I am trying to pick up Spanish rather slowly though. I am also focusing on the spoken language. Any Spanish I would type would be English-pheonetic.
