I just recently received my Lacie 160 GB FW drive, after ordering it. God damn is this thing noisy. It sounds like a small drill. Can this possibly be normal, or did I perhaps stumble into a bum unit?

Is it one of the D2 designs? My 120GB is pretty quiet during writes and reads. just makes the usual chuggy hard drive noises. The older design lacie dvd-rw I have sounds like a wind tunnel though, so I hardly ever have it on.

it's this model.
It's VERY loud. I'm guessing it's defective.
Damn

I'd question it as well. That's the same as mine and I wouldn't term it noisy at all

I have the same model. Mine has a nice little whine, but it doesn't grate my ears like cheese.

just hooked mine up yesterday... It's really only the fan you hear, and if you push back far enough, you don't notice.

Frankly, It doesn't bother me enough, since i finally got some decent hard drive space spinning at 7200rpm.

There is no fan in the d2 drive.

The disk itself does make a little noise, but if it is screeching, or making some other loud noise, it may be a bum unit.

Give LaCie a call or send them an email.

Yea, it should not be making that kind of noise. You should return it for a new one.

Their SE2001 cases had a good noise to them too. I have a CD-RW drive in one, and boy is that thing loud. I only keep it on when I'm using it though, so it's no big deal.
