LOL WINDOZE! KLEVAR SPELLINGS!1!!

I really would like to know his computer's specs. I built a computer last summer for $300 that runs Vista perfectly minus Aero Glass, and I could fix that with a $25 graphics card. My roommate's three year old laptop runs it better than XP. It's reeeeeeeally not that bad.

Uhh, excuse me? Plan to back up your post with actual references? What $25 graphics card will run Aero Glass? And a 3 year old laptop running Vista BETTER then XP? Hah.

Reference
Radeon X300SE

He's had nothing but problems trying to get his graphics card and other components supported since he reinstalled XP a year or so ago (the manufacturer didn't include restore discs and their website doesn't have the right drivers). But Vista detected and automatically installed drivers for all of his components automatically. He put it on a 10 gig partition at first to test it out but after two days he's ready to make it his primary OS.

And? The X300SE is quite capable of running Aero Glass. Even on the Beta version, they had to open seven windows and fling them around wildly to notice any problems at all. And it can easily be found for under $30.

Yes, that was tested on the first public beta of Vista, which was released a year ago. A lot has changed. Reviews on CNET posted recently state you need a much higher video card or the GUI will seem very sluggish.

Why is that Cats? Because OMG WIDOZE SUCKS LOL? Because you've used the betas, release candidates, and now the final version of Vista? Or because you hate Microsoft?

Prolly because its CNET, actually.

It was just a joke, don't worry. And as a matter of fact, Aero's requirements HAVE increased since the Beta builds (but not since the RCs). You now need a DX9-compatable card for the effects, where the earlier requirements were only DX8. So a lot of older cards (Radeon 9200, por ejemplo) no longer can run Aero, even though Vista could be hacked to work with them under Beta 1 and Beta 2.

The latest cards, have Pixel Shader 2.0, but the auction doesn't clarify that correctly, back when Vista RC1 was out there were only a few 2-3 ATI cards that supported Aero and I don't think the 300 was one of them. I'd be weary about that one on eBay since it doesn't clearly state 2.0 Pixel Shader. If you not buying Ultimate Vista though, no point in upgrading. I was looking at the x1300 or x1600 for myself, but with the list growing now, a cheaper card might be an option.

The lastest ATI list.

My two year-old laptop runs Vista better than XP as well. It has a 64MB Radeon Mobility X600 with 256MB shared video memory and runs Aero with no lag under normal conditions.

I don't understand why everyone is so outraged that DirectX 10 and Vista is pushing hardware standards.

Aero is just one of many improvements to Windows. If you don't have a video card that supports it, and don't want to buy one, then don't. Enjoy the rest of the improvements.

I wouldn't be surprised. I have a Radeon X600 with 128MB dedicated VRAM in the machine I'm using now and it's painful. It functions, but not smoothly. That said: There's no real point to Aero-Glass anyway ... it looks horrid visually. You'll be switching back to 2000 "classic" mode within a week anyway. (There is no "XP" classic mode so the fisher-price look will die away eventually.)

Aero is an improvement? Microsoft needed to include it so the masses would have a reason to upgrade, but it's just eye candy.
