I keep getting some ugly shadows behind all of desktop icons/labels...

Example:

When it should look like this:

This is an Archive/Intall; however, I've seen it on my Clean Install as well on another machine.

10.3.1 did not fix this. Is this a universal problem for people? Any fixes?

Thanks.

I got the same shadow glitch on archive & clean installs. It's corrected when I select the icons and then deselect them. So it looks like a desktop refresh issue.

Good, glad I am not the only one then. And yes, a simple select and deselect fixes it for the time being.

I've certainly seen it... it was reported in 7b85 before Panther actually shipped.

Hadn't seen it yet with 10.3.1 but I only installed it an hour ago... if you still see it that's a bummer :/

Must effect only certain configs, because I've not seen this on any of my 3 machines - G5 with an upgrade install, 1GHz TiBook with an upgrade install, 600MHz iBook with a clean format/install.

This bug also appears on Rev A PB 17", Panther clean install.

Be sure to file a bug report or feedback to Apple if you have this problem, or anything else. Please don't just mention it on the forums, let Apple know to.

im sure apple are aware of the issue, since this is widely well-known since the days when 7b85 reared up its cute butt. im expecting (ok, hoping for) a bigger .x update to squash all the graphical bugs/inconsistencies/etc.

I don't think so, it's affected all the machines I've installed Panther on (iBooks, PowerBook G4, G5 Dual 2GHz)...and I've done clean, archive, and upgrade installs...

Possibly it "stands out" more with different backgrounds...

It's strange how some have this and some don't. I've got a dual G4 at home, and did an archive and install of Panther, while on my PB 17 revA I did a clean install. Neither one of these computers has the shadow glitch.

FWIW, this looks lice a recurrence of the same bug that afflicted one of the earlier revisions of OS X (10.1.x or 10.2.x - can't remember which one now). IIRC, and it is quite a bit hazy, it related to the number of lines you use for displaying filenames in icon display (which you can alter using TinkerTool - have you done that at all?). Apple did fix this with one of their 10.1.x/10.2.x releases, but try resetting your filename display to the default (assuming you've altered it).

Edit: forgot to mention that this could explain why some people see this problem whereas others don't. Also, don't despair - if they could fix it before, then they can fix it again (assuming it is the same bug reappearing).

The same thing has been happening for as long as I can remember having 10.3. I'm over it... at least that MP3 Finder bug is fixed.

Yeah, this bug has been around since the beginnnigs...but it is really harmless. Apple will probably fix it in the future, but for now just live with it.
I have had it since I can remember.

If I am going to be storing stuff on my desktop for awhile, I'll just put a label on it so the shadow doesn't show up.

So far 10.3.4 seems to have fixed it for me. Still too early to tell though. I'll let you know later in the day.

It hasn't been "fixed" if 99% of people still have it. It's just fixed for you

So far so good... if nothing more it seems to be an improvement. I don't know exactly what to do to reproduce the problem, but it has also annoyed me for a good while. As I said, so far everything seems good!

Hmmm, I still have the faint line under an inactive window... but the broken shadowing effect seems to be corrected.

I also had an issue where the blue highlighted scroll bars would only become 1/2 highlighted when made active (top half would look like it was unselected and the bottom would be blue/active)

We're getting there.

So far so good as well. It seemed to have FINALLY fixed it. We'll just have to wait and see for sure.

that's why I use a desktop that it is difficult to see the bug. Can anyone confirm or deny if it has been fixed in 10.3.5? (I would like to finally change my desktop ).

Read above silly, that's the whole point of this thread...

So far, it's shown that 10.3.5 has fixed the problem.

I did read above silly. So far a total of 3 people have said they have not seen it yet (meaning in the past day or so since 10.3.5 just came out). Considering the same claims were initially made with 10.3.4, that is not really sufficient evidence to confirm or deny anything other than the fact that 3 people have installed 10.3.5 so far.

So how many people do you need before you believe the news? Just wondering.

I just got back from the future, apparently the shadow bug has been fixed with 10.3.5. Unfortunately some people have trained themselves to automatically select desktop items to make the bug go away. The future is a bleak place my friends, tennis elbow runs rampant.
