I just got an un-expected e-mail from Comcast claiming they have doubled my internet download speed to 3mbps (from my current 1.5mbps)....sure enough, I reset my cable modem and I'm off and running, and from what I understand all this is FREE! That's pretty sweet....
Anybody get an e-mail today about this?

You may want to check. Charter did the same thing, and it was only free till spring. Then it will change price.

Yeah, same here.
It sucks so much. I am SO use to it now.
This tactic should be outlawed!
I will have to upgrade in march .

I wish I could pay less for 1.5MBps service instead of the same for faster. Cable is EXPENSIVE!

Well, I called Comcast and they claim the prices won't change because of this upgrade; however, they of course didn't rule out future higher prices (which makes sense I suppose)...

Yeah, that's the tactics the cable companies are using. Keeping their price the same while upgrading speed, while DSL providers are lowering prices and keeping speeds the same. I'm quite happy paying $26.95 for my DSL, and I switched from Roadrunner. No real noticable speed decrease. In fact, if anything, my online gaming got faster because my upstream is very consistent.

Even more interesting in 2005 they will be offering 8 megs through power lines! All you need is one central modem in the house and any outlet will have internet access.
I've heard about this. Neat stuff!

Tactics aside, I would love to have cable again. I have CenturyTel DSL, 512/256, $50/month. It's the only high speed choice where I live.

That's good to know. I'm right by Toronto I would think we'd get it first if not very soon. I'd like to try it out.

I was told to un-plug my cable modem for 60 seconds and re-connect...everything was automatic...

Last night Mediacom doubled my down/up caps to 3 mbps/256 kbps. Finally, I can run my SLiMP3 server online!! No price increase, either.
Yet.

It will do it on its own. You should even have to unplug it.

$8.66 a month for cable Internet? I pay about $30 per month, and I think that it's about the same in most places...

Time Warner Cable here in Rochester, NY let me go from 2 MBPS to 3 MBPS (50% faster) for free... they did it to everyone without letting you know (it's on the new TV commercials). So I called and asked and they said its true, everyone is running at 3 MBPS and it will never cost more.

Where do you live? They started upgrading some folks in the East Coast late last year. In October/November I asked them when they would upgrade us folks here in the Bay Area and I was told December. February is around the corner and no upgrade yet.

Go to dslreports > Tests+Tools > Speed Tests and test your speed. It'll give you a more accurate measure of your speed.

results from speedtest:
Your download speed : 29901876 bps, or 29901 kbps.
A 3650.1 KB/sec transfer rate.
Your upload speed : 12958963 bps, or 12958 kbps.
Seems like broadband .. above the 1mbit barrier!

Mine certainly isn't 3Mbps, and that pisses me off because they keep running those damn commercials.

Frankly, I would've been happier if they left my downstream at 1.5 and bumped my upstream to 512kbps.

I really wish I could get cable access in my area. I used to have Comcast in the past, and they are way better then the DSL I use now. I'm willing to pay the extra cost per month. It's just worth it!

I pay exactly the same for Mediacom service here. I got an email the other day stating that they were going to bump up the speed soon also but I don't remember what the exact numbers were.

According to DSLReport's speed text, my Comcast service is running @ 2176 kbps/down, 244 kbps/up.
Not bad. Above 2 Mbits. I can live with it. Though I'd really like 512 kbps upstream, too

I'm alittle confused here. I'm on Rogers, I reset my router and I'm still getting 1.3-1.5mbps.
I'm getting sad... is there something I'm missing here? Restart?
