DVD drive in mac mini won't work

Whenever a dvd is loaded the computer fails to recognise it, makes a few whirring noises and then spits it out.
How can I troubleshoot the problem? What can I do to get it to work?

If you have a bootable DVD, try to boot from it by holding down the alt key on start up. If the drive still spits it out, the drive is most likely faulty and you should find a replacement for it.

Isn´t it the "C" key, that forces the Mac to boot from an optical medium (and "alt" to look for different boot partitions/drives)"?!
edit: and yes, these optical drives tend to get flaky over time (i have replaced a total of three over the past years). There is no option of repairing it, the whole unit has to be replaced.

Make sure the disc quality is good. eg. Brand new commercial disc. Not a home made DVD+R or something.
If it is busted, although less elegant than replacing the drive, it's easier and even often cheaper to add an external drive. They go for about 30-40 bux. USB 2.0 is fine.

It's not looking too good. (Although it's fortunately still in warranty). Isn't there a hardware test? How can it be done in Snow Leopard?

If it's still under warranty, just take it in.
However, if I remember correctly, the hardware test is on your applications install disc... which doesn't help you because your drive is busted. Newer machines can do the hardware test over the internet though.
Plus even if you could get the hardware test to work (say on an external drive or over the internet), I'm not sure such a test would find anything wrong with a drive like that. I'm sure it still shows up as fine to OS X, even though it isn't.

A hardware test will not really help much with the DVD drive. If it still won't read a disc when its not booted into the OS, the drive is faulty. If you don't have a bootable DVD to test with, just take it to Apple. It usually is a faulty drive tbh.
