So I've been looking at LaCie drives and I think it comes down to these two:
The 250gb one
The 500gb one
The only reason I'm hesitating about the 500 gig is (obviously) the money. But it would be nice to have 500 gigs... What do you guys think?

Then it sounds like you need the largest.

Egh, I won't be happy about shelling out $500... I was hoping to buy a new iPod because my music won't fit on my old one. But you're probably right...

Well either you have to spend the money now or in a year from now. The only problem is you will have to worry about what to do with all your old hard drives.

You really need that many full quality DVD's that you might watch once in a year or are you just a compulsive collector.

What is more worth it, having to spend hundreds on hard drives to store all those movies or spending $3 when you want to rent that movie?

I'm a compulsive collector. I've been seriously restraining myself because I have so little HD space left. My friends ridicule me because all of my music is in AAC instead of Apple Lossless...

I think you should buy one only if you can get it for less than $0.50 per GB. Subscribe to alerts for IDE drives on DealMac.com; they often list drives as large as 250GB.

Do you mean the other way around?

I used to collect games, never used them so I tossed them, I am a better off now without them.

Ditch that DVD crap and rent from time to time. Or download it, watch it and if you don't plan on watching it again within a month toss it.

Right now, I have 30 DVDs on my local HDs. They are all ripped from retail DVDs. For 8.5GB DVD archive.. how about invest on a DL burner.. I know the media is pricey (~$10 a piece)

Meanwhile, I have 3x120GB and 1x80GB HDs.

That's what I started to do as well. Keep the rare ones that would be a bitch getting later. Burn to DVD-R if possible.

No, they're compulsive collectors too. It's because I'm running out of space...

...and you need two of those 500GB discs!
One for your collection and one for the backup - I lost my collection last week when my HD died...
