hey guys, long time reader first time poster. I went on the apple site today to order myself an isight camera and noticed it was nowhere to be found. any one heard of a possible upgrade or discontinue of it? perhaps they will incorporate a built in isight to the apple displays soon?

I to went to the apple store to get one for my mother and apple store clerk told me they were pulled off the shelf and not getting any new ones. The guy also said he thought they might be getting a new model in Jan. However I find it hard from a money making perspective that they would pull the old ones off because a new model was coming out in Jan. Any other perspective would be great.

I've heard either that, the cinema displays may have them built in, or that the isights were creating a lot of waste when being recycled and got the environmental people on their ass.

Check my blog (link on sig). I reported this to MacNN after I noticed this on the 18th. I hope there will be a option of having one built-in to the display.

EDIT: here is the thread I posted about incorperating the iSight into Apples displays when I noticed that they weren't at the store: http://forums.macnn.com/89/macnn-lou...hould-do-make/

One thing is what if you have a MB(P) or iMac with a iSight already built and your running dual display. Will the iSight on the main display be the one thats on?

Apple pulled iSight from European stores a while back. It was primarily because of EU regulations about lead content of electronic devices. I expect a newly designed, lead free, gorgeous iSight in the near future. Maybe not to compete with the theoretical display with iSight built in, but to compliment it.

According to the rumor, possible HDCP in the new displays. Looks like Blu-ray in the MP is coming too, possibly?

And... that sucks, the standalone iSight is far better than the built-in ones.

I would like the new displays to have more inputs. Like HDMI and maybe S-Video. Hell, lets add some speakers!

If you had HDMI you would want some speakers. Apple stopped selling there speakers awhile ago and it would be nice for a comeback.

I dont know about that, I here alot of people saying the built-in isight is clearer than the original. Personally i cant tell the difference.

I also read that they maybe adding a 17 inch to the line. Which would be nice for me as a second display. Especially if they have the ability to rotate 90 degrees into portrait mode.

I'm still amazed that people are paying over $100, much less $200, for a 320x240x30 webcam with a fancy case.

i don't get apple's thinking here.. by building iSight into their whole product line they're excluding themselves from secure business environments, or any secure environment for that matter. it'll be impossible to buy a mac display without an iSight if they build them into their cinema displays, as every other product except the mini has one already. i think they should give buyers an option to opt out on a couple of their products, at least the MBP and future ACD models, at least that way we can choose

In the immortal word of Lex Luthor:
WRONNNNNNGGG!

ISight - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia :
"iSight's ¼-inch color CCD sensor has a 640×480-pixel VGA resolution, and it has a custom-designed three-part F/2.8 lens with two aspherical elements. It features autoexposure, autofocusing from 50 mm to infinity, and video capture at 30 frames per second in 24-bit color with a variety of shutter speeds. iSight includes internal microphones with dual-element noise suppression."

640x480x30fps cam with autofocus lens, autoexposure, mic and firewire (this cam came out before USB2 was common on Apple hardware IIRC).

Thanks for playing though!

As the developers note says "The iSight camera uses a CCD video sensor to generate a color image as large as 640 x 480 pixels." Note "generate" rather than "capture".
Also, from the iMac iSight page: "with four times the resolution of previous iSight"
Hard to quadruple the resolution and end up at 640x480 if you're not starting at 320x240.

i'm not sure what the up roar is all about, it's the nature of the business sometimes when companies pull their product from the shelves before the next model comes out. Cingular wireless does this with some phones before the new ones are released. believe me i've had to wait. just be patient and the new isight will out soon.

It's gone. Macs, except the mini and the Mac Pro, come with iSight built in. It's not on the Apple Store site anymore, so I'm assuming it's gone for good.

Also, it's there, not their.

The iSight was a great camera. The built-in cameras in the laptops lack a whole lot of features, not the least of which is the ability to aim the thing. I hope Apple comes back with a new camera, soon.

they need to make one that like 2 or 3 megapixel. look at HP /sony their camera is 1.3 mega pixel. i had a friend at my house the other day he has an LG cell phone with 1.3 MP and it looks way better the i sight even in the dark. apple makes such a big deal about isight when it looks so crapy when its on.
