Along with the main iOS, WatchOS, MacOS updates, Apple dropped an iOS 15.8 update today. My 6s lives on!

huzzah!

DD is begging for an upgrade from 6s. Even willing to give up the headphone jack.

I've avoided the smartphone wagon, mostly to avoid yet another upgrade treadmill. What is their upgrade reason? Do they want/need a better camera, or is it just the "newer & shinier" bug?

I held out forever, rocking a flip phone for ages, until the hinges were coming apart and the two halves wouldn’t stay together anymore. My wife had retired her 6s because the speakers were messed-up, and it was just sitting in a drawer. I figured free was an unbeatable deal, so I got a SIM and joined the smartphone club.

I suppose I’ll keep it until it dies. It’s pretty perfect for me. I only use it for phone and text, really. Only occasionally getting on the web or checking a weather app. No email. It’s just a phone. A nice, small, thin, phone. Like Jobs intended.

I gave up the headphone jack, but man I can't give up the home button. Facial ID is worse in every way, thumb print recognition is superior.

Couldn't disagree more.
Touch ID struggled when I had sweaty fingers (I am an avid bike rider). And it doesn't work when I am wearing gloves (e. g. long-fingered gloves when riding my bike or wear nitrile gloves). Ideally, I would like both for more security/more choice.

PS I kept my iPhone 7 until the charging port broke. Loved that thing. But not as much as my 12 mini, which is the best iPhone I have ever used and on par with the 4S as the best and most beautiful iPhone ever. (The 13 mini would be superior as it has much better battery life.)

Yup. TouchID always sucked for me while FaceID worked flawlessly from the beginning.

Yup.
There'd be spells where TouchID worked great. Until it didn't. I have a feeling, performance would degrade over time. Are my finger tips changing with wear? No idea.

FaceID doesn't care whether I wear my regular glasses, cycling glasses, a big helmet, … it really works. The only limitation is that the phone has to point towards my face. Plus, there are security benefits, if I get a notification, it is hidden by default until it recognizes my face. That happens completely transparently.

Had the degradation problem as well.

Moisture is a huge problem for it. My pet theory as to the cause is the tech was developed in the desert.

Meanwhile while your facial id is recognizing you, my phone is already unlocked because I grabbed it in my pocket with my finger on the button.

It’s a trade-off. I make use of notifications, and I don’t get to see them using that method.

Edit: I also benefit from being allowed a chance to eye the big clock.
