Hey all, I'm back from my sabbatical from MacNN for a bit.

I hope this post doesn't count as spam, but if any of you happen to remember me this is one of the big reasons why I haven't been here for the past several months. I've been working my tail off on a piece of software that will let you easily, and securely, lock-down folders on your Mac.

I present to you:

You can see it in action at www.taoeffect.com

You might think that it's kinda lame to announce something like this on a forum, but uh... MacNN is the best place I've known to discuss all things Mac related, and I sorta grew up here (going online to spend hours debating one topic or another after school).

Let me know what you think!

Nothing wrong with a veteran member announcing the results of their labors. I've changed the title to prefix it with [Ann] for 'announcement.'

How's it work, encrypted disk images I presume?

Ticking sound coming from a .pkg package? Don't let the .bom go off! Inspect it first with Pacifist. Macworld - five mice!

Thanks!

It does use encrypted disk images to achieve the encryption, yes, but it can also protect folders, insecurely, without them. Complete Finder integration is achieved through a sophisticated event system in the background that I'll write more about later.

The video is very impressive looking (although I would have gone with more of a 'James Bond' or 'Mission: Impossible' background music to go with the app name . I'm looking forward to hearing more about it.

And congrats on all your hard work coming to fruition.

Cool. Just yesterday I was thinking about such functionality and wondering why Apple has yet to put it into the Finder.

Cold Warrior is right: we don't have any problem to let long-standing members advertise their work, if properly done. As long as the sole purpose of the membership isn't to promote his/her own software, I consider this a service to the community.

Can you post when the Preview is available? And is this going to be shareware?

I did consider using some popular song, but I thought that there might be copyright issues to doing that.. Let me know if I'm mistaken, it's something I've been curious about.

Not sure what you mean by preview, but if you click "More Info" on the site it says there that it'll be available sometime in October. Sorry, can't give a definite date yet. And yes, currently my plans are to make it available as shareware (I've spent wayyy too long working on this to make it free , believe it or not this is not an easy thing to do).

I need some help spreading the word about it, so if you blog or tweet about it you'll get a free copy when it's released! Check the site for specific conditions (click More Info).

Great.

But before I pull the trigger, some questions:

How does the interaction with TimeMachine work ?
Is the encrypted folder backed up encrypted ?
Can it be restored encrypted ?
Is the content still visible in TimeMachine ?

Obviously, I'd like to encrypt sensitive, important data.
Since it's important, I'd also need it backed up on a regular basis. So the encryption has to work flawlessly with TM.

Espionage takes special care to integrate well with any backup program, including Time Machine. See the Help documentation, I think it will answer all your questions. Particularly look at the section that talks about the password prompt and the ignore list.

Is the encrypted folder backed up encrypted ?
Yes.

Can it be restored encrypted ?
Yes.

Is the content still visible in TimeMachine ?
The content is only visible when the folder is unlocked.

I hope that answered your questions, but believe me, we put a lot of effort into the built into the Help that comes with Espionage, so check it out! It will explain how this works in detail. And if you don't find your answer there just post back here (it will also help us build a better FAQ).

It's clear you put a considerable amount of work into this software and the marketing of it. Congrats on your accomplishment. I will be purchasing it too.

Great work, that's how a Mac app should be. BTW, I found this goodie on your website:

If you mean will the different copies of Espionage auto-detect when the folder has been unlocked by another copy, the answer is no currently. But that's a neat idea and it may be something that we'll implement in the future if there's enough interest!

Now that we're all up and running though, please direct your questions to support <at> taoeffect <dot> com, as that will make it easier for us to track and respond to your questions! (And you'll probably get a quicker response that way too!)
