After the upgrade finished and the computer (original version 20" aluminum iMac) restarted, it told me there were conflicts with a bunch of fonts and offered to put them in the trash. Here's a list:
Helvetica.dfont
HelveticaNeue.dfont
Keyboard.dfont
LastResort.dfont
LucidaGrande.dfont
Monaco.dfont

What is a "dfont," and why were these fonts, that were installed by the OS as far as I know, problems?

.dfont seems to be the new system font in Snow Leopard. I suggest keeping them and deactivating the other conflicting fonts.

Are you having problems with Font Book?

I don't know if I'm expecting too much but I stuck about 500 fonts in it, deactivated almost all of them, but still suffered major freezes when waking up my MBP - due to (I think) the process 'fontworker' (also significant problems with Flash CS4 but I think that must be Flash, as no problems with Illustrator.)

I figured because they were deactivated it should be fine, but this is simply not true. The Freezes have completely disappeared now I have deleted them from Font Book completely.

.dfonts are not new to SL. They've been around since 10.0. They are a data-fork only font. Older Classic fonts were dual-forked. Actually, most of the fonts in SL are now True Type.

So these .dfont files are safe to trash?

Make sure you still have a Helvetica.dfont and a Monaco.dfont in your /System/Library/Fonts folder. If you do, then delete them. The others have been replaced with .ttf or .ttc fonts in SL. So the others you can definitely get rid of.

Yep, those two are there in /System/Library/Fonts. The "conflict" files are on their way out!
