I'm about to make a move on Microcenter's 12" PB G4 867 Superdrive for $1600. Is the standard 256 RAM enough for burning DVD's without any problems? Any other things to consider? I can upgrade to Panther for $20 till 1/31/04. Not worried about the 867/1 GHZ performance difference. Any other places to shop and consider a better deal?

Thanks, Scott

I'd get yourself another 512 MB RAM for a total of 640. (The 867 has two 128 MB sticks in it.) 512 MB RAM is about $100.

Actually, what I'd really recommend is getting the 1 GHz PowerBook 12". It's 15-20% faster, it has 256 MB built-in in 1 DIMM, a better video card, and it also supports DVI. All together, I think it is worth the extra $200. And you might be able to get away with 512 MB total, so you could save a bit on RAM. A stick of 256 MB is about $45. (I'd still recommend the 512 though, for a total of 768 MB.)

Seriously? With OS X, 256MB of RAM is just enough to do your email with. Even Safari doesn't like running with that little RAM. Media apps like iDVD really prefer running with closer to 1GB of RAM than 512MB, even.

I run a 12" 1GHz with 512MB RAM and burn full DVDs no problems at 2x.

Video editing I probably would not be able to do very efficiently, but the question was burning DVDs and not video editing.
