Hi

After an accidental power cut my IMac can't find the internal audio sources anymore. Also the system wasn't able to recognize an external audio source (output)
What do I need to do to get the audio's running again?
The internal audio source is listed under hardware (Intel High Definition Audio)

OS X 10.8.5

tx a lot for your suggestions

Where are you trying to change the Setting? System Preferences? Audio/MIDI Setup? Some Application?

Silly question, but have you tried a fresh restart? Some of your audio sources might have gotten "confused" by the power loss and are locked up. A restart can help with that and costs nothing but a few seconds.

Hi there
Tried to change the settings via the systems preferences, sounds (the loudspeaker symbol), but the system doesn't offer any list at all.

Also did shut down and switched on the mac several times without success.

Try this. Locate this file:

(Mac HD)/Library/Preferences/com.apple.audio.SystemSettings.plist

Move it to the desktop and reboot.

So it sounds like internal and external speakers aren't working?

Hi there
Moved the file (Mac HD)/Library/Preferences/com.apple.audio.SystemSettings.plist to the desktop and deleted the file in the preferences folder. Unfortunately without success.

Yes, the system doesn´t recognize internal and external loudspeakers.

Any other ideas apart from reinstalling the whole program?
Can I download and install a complete file from somewhere and plug it into the system preferences?

After moving the audio prefs file, did you reboot? If you just move the file, the OS may have it open. In which case OS X will not notice it was moved. Upon reboot, the OS will check the usual folder, and create a blank prefs file if the normal one is absent.

Note: after the reboot, you can trash the moved prefs file.

This is often an issue with older computers for some reason, please try this:
1. Shut down computer normally.
2. Power up the iMac while holding down the SHIFT KEY
3. Don't release shift key until after you see display 'glitch' or refresh after 3-4 MINUTES
4. Login window should reflect SAFE BOOT in red text
5. Go to System Preferences > Sound and re-select your preferred input and output sources
6. Close preferences, then REBOOT
7. You should now have full access to audio and be able to function/switch normally

I've used this trick several dozen times for friends -- heard it from an Apple Genius, although many since
just nod their heads like I'm talking voodoo.

Please let us know what happens.

I didn't know there were still Mac User Groups in Austin. There are only a couple that I know of here in San Antonio...

Anyway, I don't think it's voodoo. It does sound an awful lot like a Windows tactic though. Which is sad... It says that OS X isn't staying as compatible as it should with "not so old" computers. Losing prefs is a bad thing.
