Now that my wife has her 6s set-up for iCloud backup, she’s noticed that her battery’s life has gone to hell. Like, “can’t get through a normal day without putting it on a charger” hell. She lives and works through the phone, and battery life has been fine up until right after getting iCloud backup set-up.

For the life of me, I can’t figure out what might be the culprit here. If I understand right, iCloud runs the backup once a day, right? It surely isn’t continuously sending stuff up to the cloud, is it? Judging by the rate at which the battery is draining, it certainly seems like something is constantly working in the background. She hasn’t installed anything new.

Any suggestions on where to look? Tips? Tricks? What might the most optimal settings be for iCloud backup in order to keep activity low?

Thanks.

I may have already asked this but is she on iOS 15?

That appeared to be killing my battery for awhile, but recent revisions have helped.

I was also having recent(ish) issues with Safari eating my battery. That was pre-15, and it seems to have stopped.

Not sure if she’s on 15 yet. I think not, though.

Total long shot… do you have Catalina running somewhere? This supposedly has a bug with iCloud Keychain sync.

Any chance she's a photo person, and has nearly filled her iPhone with pics and/or videos? If her iPhone were nearly full, the initial sync could take days to complete. Depending on your upload options.

Oh, yeah, she's a photo person (i.e. grandmother) But we already did the interminable initial sync weeks ago.

I'll look. Though, I don't think she has anything synced to her laptop, Keychain or otherwise. She was strictly wanting just iCloud backup for her phone, largely because of her masses of photos.
