Is there a free and open source app for transcoding and burning video files to DVD. I have Toast but wondered if there was a free one a little less top heavy.

It's neither free nor open, but VisualHub is fast, light, and does a great job.

Get mpeg streamclip from here... http://www.squared5.com . This will convert to just about anything. Then use iDvd to burn to disk. What kind of files are you working on?

VisualHub is a frontend for ffmpeg, so you could hypothetically do everything it does for free and... openly.

I am using Toast successfully but it seems to take ages for it to recognise movie files (avi mainly) prior to encoding and burning. Whilst I shall always use Toast at times I don't want to have to wait several minutes to wait for it to validate an avi file before accepting it. It is primarily this reason that I wondered if there was an additional app to use for just this purpose that might be just simple but effective. Thanks for all your suggestions.
