I'm just in the process of importing Bach: The Complete Works . Over 700 CDs. So far my library's at 5002 songs, 14.5 days, 25.50 GB, and aren't close to finished.

So I'm just wondering how big your libraries are.

Let the showboating begin.

I've seen numbers far, far larger than mine (8400 files) on here.

Does iTunes get sluggish when you get up around 5000, or is it my imagination? This is my real reason for posting.

At start up I get a "Loading iTunes library" progress bar that takes about, well, a few seconds, but I've never seen it before. Plus most executions—like changing information for multiple tracks—is taking longer. It's not harddisk space, cos' I still got 30 GB free.

Yes, I noticed once I hit 7500 it actually takes time to start up and shut down.

Scares the **** out of me, honestly.

Edit: I also suspect iTunes 7 isn't as efficient as its predecessor's because that's when I started noticing those symptoms.

I'm somewhere between 20 and 25 gigs. I'm not entirely sure since I'm not home.

My ~30GB seems tiny compared to my friend's library which is easily over 100GB. He's the type that just downloads anything and everything he can find just to make his library as big as he can get it. He doesn't even know 75% of what he has.

The % of your library you've listened to is a good indicator.

I only have 2200 songs in my library. And I thought that was a lot

My 40 GB iPod hasn't even reached half capacity (and it's 2 years old). 11.7 GBs...

I don't know my exact number, but I've recently started putting movies into iTunes for network sharing and, in the future, appleTV. At around 1 gig per movie, and potentially hundreds of movies, it could get up there pretty high.

thinking about dropping my 30gig pod for an 8gig nano since I dont need all that space, and it's big.

Once I get an iPhone I can see my iPod usages dropping. 7 GB is fine for me, cause it's more than I listen to on a regular basis anyways. I'll just make a smart playlist with my 5 GBs worth of most played songs, the rest can be pictures and small vids

iTunes 7 started to do this. The older versions never did.

I have more but I threw the stuff I didn't listen to a lot onto an external drive. that probably is 5-10 gigs there that's not in my iTunes library

I've got about 20/30GB of music, ~6000 songs. Been trimming it down, though.

If you include videos, it's closer to 40 GB.

37gb not including videos. I have been getting more picky about what I add to my library, but at the same time I am also importing CDs at higher bitrates so they take up more space.

19848 items, 56 days, 116.82GB

I keep all my music on an external hard-drive (because my MBP has the 120GB hard-drive), and iTunes isn't slow at all. It has to 'Load the Library' everytime I launch iTunes, but honestly it takes maybe 3-5 seconds to execute that task. I think it's faster than iTunes 6 was.

What widget is that, by the way?

Hah...that sounds exactly like me. I don't use iTunes, but my iPod reports 7,916 songs, for a total of 39.3 GB or so. Some of that is used up with RockBox.

When i2Hub was still around, I download craploads of music while at work. I worked at IUPUI, so connections to computers at IUPUI, IU, and Purdue were insanely fast (the three campuses have direct WAN links to each other over fiber optic cable). I got so much music I didn't know what to do with it all.

Now I listen to three, maybe four albums in any given month. I could probably get a shuffle (I desperately want the orange one, btw) and it would be adequate for my needs.
Sell or send me your vintage Mac things if you don't want them.

right now I have my music on my macbook's hard drive but it's almost 50 gigs and taking up a lot of space. I have an external drive I can throw all the music on but I am worried my library will get messed up. when I move all the files won't they come up as missing in iTunes and I'll have to re-add them?

Nope. In fact, I have my iPod synced up to my external iTunes library as well, and everything works wonderfully.

Just create a place on your external hard-drive for all your music and drag it over from your MacBook. Make sure you also grab the iTunes related files, which should be in the 'iTunes' folder within your Music folder, and put those on your external hard-drive as well.

Now that you have your music and the related iTunes files on your external hard-drive, quit iTunes. Then go to Applications and Option-Click on iTunes... it will ask you to choose your iTunes library. Hit 'Choose Library...' and direct it to the iTunes Library Database File. This will direct iTunes to your external library, and it will keep your ratings, play counts, playlists, and everything else intact. It's awesome.

23,737 Songs here

It used to be over 130 GB's, but I re-encoded the whole library down to 128 / sometimes 160 kbps, and now it is down to 103.9 GBs' for the library.

It is 64 days, 2 hours, 53 minutes, and 33 Seconds (64:02:53:33)

EDIT: I didn't think it would be, but I think this is the most on the thread so far! Anyone else have more that hasn't spoken up?
yep.
