I'm trying to open a package resource from an app in Panther. What app do I need to use to accurately modify a unix executable? Text Edit will open it, but displays a substantial amount of "gibberish." Thanks!

It's compiled, therefore uneditable. Unless you know assembly language there isn't much hope of modification.

If you're looking for a resource look in the resources directory of the package.

I don't know who gave you the impression that it's normal to edit machine code by hand, but I think they were pulling your leg.

If I need to view or edit the contents of compiled or executable files, I usually use a hex editor. There is one called HexEditor, their website is www.ex-cinder.com

If it's compiled it will still look like gibberish, but at least it's organized gibberish, and you can see and edit it either by hex or by ascii.

Not just assembly language; you'd need to know the raw machine language, unless your editor disassembled the code for you.

There's already a disassembler built-in to OS X. Not into the editor mind you.
