I used to use The Gimp on Windows

as I went to their website I realized that the Mac version is a huge messed to get installed. i dont want to have to bother during this process (especially since I switch less than a month ago!)

Photoshop is quite expensive and i dont feel like installing a pirated version
Are there any alternatives?

To make it clearer I want to do small tasks like to take a color hexa from a part of picture and use it on another part of the picture for example, or to create gradient images.

Download GimpShop. There is a free and painless disk image you can use here. All you'll need to do is install Apple's X11 application, which is an optional install on your Tiger DVD.

An interesting alternative: LiveQuartz Image Editor 1.6.4 - MacUpdate

If you are liking GIMP still, you can always try GIMPshop: GIMPshop 2.2.11 - MacUpdate. Much easier to install, and equally powerful.

Seashore and Pixen are both freeware, and both include support for layers, and neither requires X11.

The only think that sucks about the gimp and related products is, it will only be useful for web graphics. As they don't support CMYK.

Another vote for Seashore. It's really a very nice application for doing basic image/photo editing tasks. You can get it here.

Another app, PixelNhance, has gotten good reviews, but I can find no screenshots for it. The company that made it is defunct, but you can still download the software.
Sell or send me your vintage Mac things if you don't want them.

Ah - thanks. I didn't know if that was the whole app or just a screenshot of a small part of it.

Also, to the OP:

If you want to be able to grab RGB and hex color values from images, just follow this tutorial to make OS X's built-in color picker an application, then add the freeware add-on that same article mentions to see hex values for selected colors.
Sell or send me your vintage Mac things if you don't want them.

thanks i finally installed GImpShop and installed X11 from the DVD. It works pretty well so far.

I sure wish they'd change the name. I'm sure it seemed hilarious at the time, but it doesn't help to persuade others that it's a serious alternative.

Yeah the Wikipedia article I read said GIF is only read-only in Seashore. Users aren't allowed to write a GIF file.

You don't need to save as GIF. You're better off with PNG.

If you want an easy to use, "standard" Gimp (not GimpShop), use Gimp.app. It's a drag-and-drop install.
