You seem to have done some (read: hardly any) research. There's about 10 threads in this forum, but you didn't find all threads regarding Max and BBX and the rest? That's strange...
Theming is not dead, it's very much alive and kicking, BUT: Leopard doesn't have a theming application yet. Most people in the theming community switched to Leopard so nobody's really interested in making themes for ShapeShifter (SS) at this point. We do know that Unsanity is working on a SS for Leopard, but in the meantime people in the theming community have moved their collective asses and started some digging of their own. So where is this going? I'd like to think this will lead to a revival of the theming community as far as the system goes. All other things are developping just fine in my opinion. I've never had this many icons (512x512) in my Candybar library and this many mods (coversutra, adium, ichat, vlc etc) on my Mac.

It is pretty disappointing that you can't customize the themes in Leopard, unless you don't mind hacking your computer to get the look you've always dreamed of. I've only owned my MBP for maybe half a year now, and while I was a Windows user I always thought Macs were totally customizable. I guess I was wrong, but in another sense I do like Leopard just the way it is so I can't complain much about it.

Coming from a Windows environment and even a Linux environment I was always customizing things. Especially in Linux box. When I first switched over to Mac Tiger was out and I was pretty satisfied with how things were, customizable wise.
When Leopard came out I immediately upgraded and was very happy. I am a little disappointed that Unsanity hasn't updated Shapeshifter but I like Leopards mature/professional look. I do as much as I can; use edited resource files, docks, tinkertool, sometimes silk, and icons are a definite. But sometimes that doesn't feel like enough.
But I guess I'll just play the waiting game like most of us here in the GUI Customization forum

I wonder how this will go when the Intel only version hits, thats if Unsanity has a Leopard ready version out by then. That's if it throws things back to square one. As it's now 7 months since Leopard has been out. With no status except they don't want you to contact them. Since it tells me it's pretty far off. At least Apple hasn't killed off icon customization e.t.c. /me thanks Panic

I'm curious as to what gave you that notion. The Mac was much more customizable back in the classic Mac OS days. There was once hope (prior to OS X 10.0's debut) that the more modular nature of OS X and its Unix core would make the platform pretty customizable (although we knew indiscriminate global patching was no longer an option because of the inherent instability problems that plagued the classic OS), but Apple made it clear once OS X came out that the UI would be essentially locked down and themes weren't going to be an official part of the new platform. Altered UIs could only be produced through hacks, and now with Leopard going forward there are security mechanisms that have substantially curtailed UI hacking options.

Yeah if icon customization wasn't available in Leopard during this whole "waiting period." I definitely would have considered going back to Tiger.

What gave me the "notion" was talking to a couple people at my local Apple retail store. During the time in which Tiger was out. I didn't totally look into it besides talking to a Mac Specialist and Genius.

I've been a member of these forums for several years now, but I only bought my very first Mac about six months ago so I'm just a Mac n00b. But, I've seen lots of screenshots of people's desktop, icons and themes, and I've been amazed at the high level of customization people have down with their Macs. However, now that I own one with Leopard, I can't do anything theme related unless I spend money on 3rd party software to achieve that look. I'm not upset in the least about these, as I love the Leopard look just how it is.

I feel the same way! Being a person who loves to customize things, I am not upset as well. I love the way Leopard looks and feels just the way it is.
