My iPod froze after I unplugged it from my computer after synchronizing. I talked to the Apple store at Woodfield Mall and the way to unfreeze it is to hold the top and bottom buttons down simultaneously for a few seconds. Not documented (at least not in the Getting Started booklet). Back in business.

Great. Not only does the OS look like System 7, it also crashes like it.

OS 7.5.3 was the real bad one.. 7.5.5 was pretty good I thought. I never used 7.6 But I hear that was better still.

I did see a review of the iPod where they said it crashed a few times.. Bit of a bummer that! Lets hope it's fixed with an easy to apply update..

Uhh - the font used on the iPod is Chicago. That is the system font used in system 7.0, not to mention the black and white menue's.

I don't think anyone on the planet would ever believe that system 7 never crashed on you. System 7.5.1 would last about 5 minutes on the internet before a type 11 error.

Someone above mentioned that the reset feature was undocumented. Not true. It's in the iPod FAQ on Apple's website.

Just in case anyone was wondering. Nice little document.

I said system 7.1 and system 7.6, which are stable, apparently 7.5.x is not.

Also, although the font looks similar, I think the iPod is more Mac OS X like with the folder listing way that you can do in OS X.

The reset command is also documented in the iPod Help documents. It amazes me how few people actually use the built-in Help Center. You'd be surprised at how 'helpful' it can be!

Good thing you skiped all the crash prone releases : rolleyes:

The font does not "look similar", it is the exact same font as system 7. So is the Black and white look.

The navigation is X like though.

Chicago was probably chosen as it is a good bold font that looks crisp on bitmap LCDs, without being too "pixelly."

It's interesting that they went with it instead of 'Espy' -- maybe evidence of Commandant Steve's rumored dislike of all things Newton!

(I'm looking forward to further irritating Jobs by placing another of favored item in close proximity to his unfavored items! http://homepage.mac.com/mgb/cube-and-newtons.jpg ... -- he'll be cursing all the way to the bank -- but I can't even get to see an iPod here in Australia let alone buy one. )

Really easy to access it on a 'frozen' device. Or, is the Help Center on your Mac?
Never ceases to amaze me, tho', how all the Mac fix-it books tell you how to recover from crashes/freezes etc. by assuming that your machine is running.

OK, ok... I just thought the system 7 one was a little fater and uglier - but of course that was back in the day, so I can't remember too well - OLD SCHOOL BABY!

Also, what's with the rolleyes msg? Are you impying I didn't use them or what? If so, then you're wrong, I used System 7.1 and System 7.6 only (oh and those 7.1.x and 7.6.x updates). I do hear that 7.5.x was horrible though - glad that's over.

System 7 crashed on my all the time. It always crashed when you tried to force quit. Force quit was the last resort that never worked, back then.
