I finally got my hands on a PSP tonight for the first time finally. The guy at the store showed me a unit who someone had turned back in for dead pixels (looked perfect to me).

The screen was jaw dropping. Very bright, turned it different angles and it looked perfect.

Had trouble turning it on through. I flicked the switch and it kept turning itself off. Finally I got it turned on and it went to the menu. I was kinda annoyed the menu had lack of clear directions. The symbol buttons kind of turned me off. It was a bit harder to navigate. I would have prefered a nice hierarical menu.

The guy at the counter threw me NFL Street to try. I popped it in, tracked down the UMD menu, and started it up. The loading times made me want to beat myself over the head with a brick. I think there were two seperate loading times before it actually got to the menu. Another longer loading time before the game actually started.

Graphics were ok, they didn't live up to the screen. If anything, slightly better than what I've seen on the DS. They were just too small and blocky on the screen, too small to see the texturing.

No audio or movies on it, didn't get a chance to play with those. Unit had a solid feel to it though.

Oh, God, what a bad game to test is with. Try Lumines, Ridge Racer, or Hot Shots Golf.

I'm surprised the USB cable can't do that in the first place o_O Well that's good to see as an add-on!

That USB cable is cool but I'm still waiting for a cradle that will allow me to sync and charge my PSP. Kinda like the iPod dock.

"On the bright side, the new firmware adds WPA (wireless security standard) support, an official Sony web browser and a wireless photo swapping feature. Also in a possible Japan only release, Sony have added a new feature called Portable TV which allows wireless video transmission to the PSP. The new firmware will be out in Japan on Wednesday"

If I were Sony I'd start pumping up the firmware in Japan too. PSP is getting owned in Japan by the DS AND the GBA.

Web browser and TV? This sounds like good stuff . Makes me want one a little bit more. I'll probably pre-order one soon (UK launch is September). Whats the best bet for getting a good deal on pre order? Pre-order now or wait 'til maybe a month before launch? How did the deals go for pre ordering in the US?

It'll be much easier if you just comply.

I can't get mine back... Kim keeps it in her purse now (plays it on breaks at school and work). Gonna have to buy another.

I just saw a preview for Lord of the Rings Tactics, a upcoming strategy RPG for PSP. Now that is a game that might make me buy a PSP! I'd be playing it at home, of course.

Just bought one today. So far I am impressed.

Have only played Ridge Racer and it is nice.

Bought Untold Legends, Lumines, and Wipeout Pure.....looking forward to Grand Theft and some zombie game.

Got the thing to connect to my Airport network. Used a USB cable from my Canon digital camera to connect the PSP to my iMac. Transferred some photos and MP3s to it, but cannot figure out how to transfer video to it, like AVIs and MPEGs.

Anybody know how to do this?

Currently, your videos need to be converted to .mp4 format. PSPWare is the best program for this.

Here's a list of features that Sony will include into firmware version 2.0 tomorrow:

Main function updated in system software version 2.0
- Network
Internet browser added
* Macromedia Flash is not supported. A part of the web pages might not be displayed correctly
* The startup of the internet browser can be limited.

- Video
Jump function added (UMD Video & UMD Music)
A-B repeat function added (UMD Video & UMD Music & videos stored in Memory sticks)
"4:3 mode" added to Video mode (videos stored in Memory sticks)
Sound mute function added (videos stored in Memory sticks)
MP4 AVC (h.264) format playback support added (videos stored in Memory sticks)

-Music
Can accept music tracks in Atract3 Plus format from "Sonicstage" under version 3.2 (now for pre-order)
MP4 (AAC) & Wave (Linear PCM) format playback support added (music stored in Memory sticks)

- Photo
Wallpaper function added
Image receiving function added
TIFF, GIF, PNG, BMP format supported

- Settings
"Korean language" added to "system settings" -> "System language"
"Character set" added to "system settings"
"Theme settings" added
"Internet browser startup limit" added to "Security settings"
"WPA-PSK (TKIP)" added to security method in "Network settings"
Keyboard now support web input.
* All the setting before the upgrade will be preserved.

Slick shoes?! Are you crazy?!

Noticed this thread wouldn't die so I thought I'd chime in with my impressions of the PSP after owning it since launch.

I haven't turned the thing on in over a month.

- The games are SO boring!
- The battery life sucks
- The ergonomics of this thing is so poor, I can't use it for more than 10 minutes at a time without my hands becoming cramped
- Disc access times make me think its running off a floppy disc

I am looking forward to the games that will be out in the Fall. I just wish I would be able to play them without losing feeling in my hands.

1. None of my games are boring.
2. Battery life turned out better than I expected considering what's running on there.
3. Wimp.
4. Depends on the game. EA Sports games have always had long load times even on PCs and consoles. Ridge Racer loads pretty fast as does Lumines. Software load times is a developer issue on desktops, consoles and handhelds.

Well, I certainly don't need it today, but would like it by Friday since I leave on a business trip Saturday and would like to be able to check my email without lugging my laptop along (or renting Wipeout from Blockbuster).

1. Lumines is kind of fun. The rest are just rehashes of old games that I've already played to death
2. Yeah, it's not TOO bad but I wouldn't really call it a "portable" device (at least by my definition)
3. Hardly. Trying to run the left shoulder button with the analog stick is complete misery. Hands aren't supposed to be contorted that way (Wipeout Pure is a perfect example; I can't play the game for more than a few minutes).
4. Doesn't matter. It still sucks. The idea of a slow optical drive in a portable device is just retarted. Should be ROM based. I want to turn a portable gaming machine on and play. Not wait around for it to finally load. Going that route would of probably fixed point 2.

That is what sleep mode is. I almost never Boot the device.

There's no problem. It's the same package. Download the 15mb file, save it to GAMES/UPDATE (double check I got the right folder name) and run it from the games menu.

Anyone playing with 3rd party stuff should already know that.

They'll open up the system eventually. Sony even said so. It's a matter of when.
