Driven by the strength of the Chinese market and the larger format iPhone 6 line, Apple is once again on the top of App Store revenues, while trailing in total number of downloads. Google commands the lead in downloads, with almost twice the number of apps served, but Apple holds an 80 percent lead over Mountainview in reaped revenue from the downloads.
Analytics firm App Annie reports that the worldwide download gap has increased from an 85 percent lead, to 90 percent in the third quarter. Apple's revenue has grown to an 80 percent lead in the same time, up from 70 percent in the third quarter.
The discrepancy in downloads to revenues is tied to the proliferation of sub-$50 smartphones in emerging markets, with little available income to purchase apps. India holds the third-highest number of downloads from Google Play, but doesn't make an appearance on the top-five list of countries by revenue for the company. China makes no appearance on the top five countries by download, or by revenue for Google Play -- piracy is blamed for the lack of revenue by Google.
For the iOS App Store, the United States leads by revenue, and comes in second for number of downloads. China tops the download chart for Apple, and comes in third for countries by revenue. Japan comes in third for number of downloads, and second for revenue.

Android developers make no money on each app but make up for it in volume!

Quote: "China makes no appearance on the top five countries by download, or by revenue for Google Play -- piracy is blamed for the lack of revenue by Google." Countries that permit piracy cut their own throats. Unable to make a decent income, developers don't create as many apps.

This is not a well-worded article in terms of statistics.
Does "an 80 percent lead over Mountainview in reaped revenue from the downloads" mean that Apple makes 80% of the total revenue pool of downloads and Google makes 20%, or that Apple's total is 80% higher than Google's (so, assuming there are no other players, that Google makes 36% of the revenue pool and Apple makes 64%)?
I assume the latter, but articles like this so frequently referring to chunk of the total pool it's not clear.

Apple's total is 80% higher than Google's, like it says. Part of the problem is how App Annie presents the numbers, with Apple having a "100 share" of both downloads, and revenue from downloads.

No, they do not. That's the point of this article.
They have much higher volume and still aren't making the money that iOS developers are.
