From here : "come see what's next for the Mac on 20 October, including a sneak peak of the next major version of Mac OS X."

Let the speculation BEGIN !!!!

I surprised that Apple didn't announce it as "Back to the MAC".

I posted the same thread, but in the OS X section (since it seems they'll probably be previewing 10.7 Lion).

All I can say is, that its about time.
I think apple has focused on the iToys for most of 2010, and to the detriment of the Mac, so its good to see apple not totally forget about the macs especially since Macs are now enjoying a 10% for market share

iToys (as you put it) are generating the majority of Apple's income and represent the future of Apple. As Steve once said, Microsoft won the PC wars. That said, I think Apple knows that OS X is the foundation for everything and I think the Mac will soon begin accelerating it's market share climb. Apple never forgot about the Mac.

YOu think people who feel compelled to sign posts on online forums also sign notes that are in their own handwriting for their significant others?

Apple has apparently decided, at the last minute, to stream the event live.

Yay stream! Boo lame rumors.

An event called back to Mac has so far (2 hours before it starts) been rumored to include:

1) a new version of iLife!!!!! (ZZzzZzzz)
2) a new Mac Book Air!!!!111 (ZZZZZZZZZZZZZ)
3) new SCROLL BARS for OS X 10.7!!! ..... oh yeah (ZzzZZzzZZzzZzzZZz)

Point being, though it is nice to see Apple devote a few moments of its precious time to gaze upon the lowly Macintosh platform, there is nothing to be excited about.

Is anyone really excited about any of the dusty long-standing rumors? Resolution independence? (ooh-ahh!) or USB3 support?

We know that Apple is incapable of making progress where it is needed, i.e. make things good, not just new. Case in point: the Finder.

Snow Leopard, an update solely to make things smoother and better and remove bugs. It so happens that 10.5 is quite a lot better and more stable than 10.6 and even if it wasn't... 10.6 doen't address any of the UI inconsistencies, there's plenty of beachballing, icons are slow to show up etc. etc.

So you guys know what the major rumor among the nerds (not us, the other nerds) is??! Well, the MERGING of OS X and iOS. Yes that's a stroke of genius!! Surely just as it would have been wonderful to use a scaled down OS X UI on an iPhone, surely it would be equally brilliant to use a scaled up iOS interface on the desktop machines!!

Unless iLife includes iBD then it's going to be a snoozer. Just hearing about the MacBook Air makes me sleepy, it's so useless.

But those are all predictable rumors. It's time for a new MBA and a new version of iLife. And by the look of the invitation the presentation will be about Mac OS X Lion. Which is also due.

However, is any of this even mildly interesting? Mac OS X is fine, it's nothing interesting, nor brilliant, nor a joy to use.. but it works more or less. So we're going to get another upgrade to OS X that is equally inspireing?

I can't wait. And of course I'll be watching the live stream.. but this time I'll have a pillow close by. Just in case.
I could take Sean Connery in a fight... I could definitely take him.

I agree completely. Apple has done nothing but frustrate me with their disregard of the Mac over the past several years. It's lowered my enthusiasm for the platform; If Apple thinks the Mac is dead, and acts as such, why should I care anymore?

That said, the duration of this event, its live streaming, and the fact that the Mac has been on a market share tear in spite of Apple's negligence has me quite hopeful that somebody has decided to right the ship.

Let's all start spreading tons of rumors about a headless iMac that you can actually upgrade until Apple is forced to actually make one.

Oh, and there is now a link on the Apple homepage to stream the event.

My sig is 1 pixel too big.

1- I'm still on 08.. ready for a new one
2- I need a portable. If an 11 inch Air comes out at the right price that would be awesome... it would remind me of my 12 inch PB that used to have.
3- I agree.

It's time, right? Has anyone gotten in on the stream? Mine says it will be available shortly, but I'm assuming that's because I'm running an older version of Quicktime on XP.
