My G3 powerbook was running nicely in Jaguar. I could even run Maya 5 at decent speeds. I upgraded to Panther yesterday and my machine is crawling nrunning only safari and ichat. It is so slow that I am going to have to wipe my system and reinstall jaguar.

Just a warning to those still on G3's

I installed it on my iBook 800 and it works fine. Maybe a little speed boost over Jag. Have any goofy 3rd-party utils installed?

Sorry to hear that. Works fabulously on my iMac DVSE 400. Countless others have posted the same.

How much free space do you have on your hard drive? You need more than 1 gig.

seems unlikely the problem is every G3...
better to document your specific issues, maybe the forums here can help.

did an archive&install on my jaguar-running pismo.

panther is MUCH faster (and much better)

how did you install it? give more info...

What type of installation did you do? An update, archive and install or fresh install? I heard people having lots of problems with update installations.

Ah it could be a HD space issue. Let me free up that gig.

I have an iBook 700 with 640 MB RAM and an ATI video card with 16 MB of video RAM. I've generally found Panther to be faster on this setup than Jaguar. However, I am a bit disappointed with Expose on this machine. The Show All Windows (F9) functionality is tends to "stutter" a bit when the windows are coming back to normal. The other two Expose actions are very fast ... but the main one used for window switching isn't as smooth as I would hope. Perhaps I notice this because on my flat panel iMac 800 the same function is smooth as silk.

Bottom line .... on the iBook 700 the F9 Expose function is definitely usable, but noticeably jerkier than on the iMac 800.

Bummer. Seems to work nicely on my wife's rev A iMac. Can't wait till they get XpostFacto finished so I can try it out on my Beige G3 (Sonnet G4 500)
Michael: Hasn't everything been sort of discovered now by like Magellan and Cortez?

The problem may be that when you did the install, you didn't have much contiguous space free, so the operating system is spread all over the hard drive. You might try to install Panter again and see if that helps.

I haven't had anyproblems, but I actually did a format & install on both of my Machines (Pismo 400 & G4 tower).

How much RAM do you have? What type of install did you do? What other utilities are you running?

Try doing a clean install instead. From the look of the room you have left on your HD, it seems to me that you did a upgrade install. See if a clean install will solve that problem.

iBook 600, no problems after removing problematic 3rd party preference pane (Silk).

Ensure you have enough free space, do an archive and install, and be sure that each 3rd party pref pane or program that adds/modifies something in /Library does not wreak havoc on your system.

I did a clean install on an iBook 500 today, no problems whatsoever. If anything, it's more responsive.

The problem is that I don't have enough HD space to do an archive and install. I think I am going to just back up my machine and do it clean.

I am on a 500 mhz 256 RAM

I have no problems on even my son's Tangerine Ibook (300) except Filemaker Pro 5.5 became a clasic application!

It used to run native however after clean install, it now boots into OS 9! when I run a file.

Some things are a little bit faster with Panther on my iBook 800 with 640MB RAM. One thing I did notice was after using the iBook for a few hours, the system would start to get really sluggish. Whenever I would type something in a document or website, there would be a couple second delay from me pressing the key and it actually showing up on the screen. Safari also seems to have a serious memory leak. Most of the time it is using 80MB+ of RAM with just 1 windows open and I have seen it go as high as 170MB with just 1 window open. Hopefully this is fixed in 10.3.1. This is with a clean install and 27GB worth of free space.

Hi, dimension10...

If you'd like more speed out of your G3 500 (a Pismo), besides making sure you've at least 500BM RAM, try upgrading the HD. When I moved my Wallstreet & my Pismo up to Travelstar 20GB it made ALL the difference. Now you can get Travelstar 30GB for about $100. It'll be like a new 'Book to you!

Do a get info on the application bundle and make sure it's not specifically set to run in Classic (which can be set for some Carbon applications).

yeah I completely reinstalled and it still seems kinda slow. Like dole mentioned I am getting a delay in type showing up once a couple of apps are running.

It may be that I need more RAM. I am just not willing to spend extra money on this machine. may just throw Jag back on.

1. Select the Application in the Finder

2. Cmd (Apple)-I or File --> Get Info

3. Set Application to not open in Classic.

Done.
