I am having a kernel panic on startup of a 2006 intel iMac running 10.4.

I had downloaded the EFI firmware update, but didnt get to install it, as I was doing a combo update for 10.4 to bring it up to 10.4.11 and it shutdown almost at the end of the update, which was not complete, now I can not start up without a kernel panic.

So can i use my 10.5 install disk to boot from and run the firmware update via terminal and hope that gets things moving again or is the OS panics because the update was not finished?

This sounds like you need to use a firmware restoration CD

Not sure about Terminal, but you could try to Archive and Install.

If you have another Mac or an external drive with Tiger on it, you can reapply the update while booted from another system.

Got it. Read too quickly and thought the firmware update had failed.

The suggestion about reapplying a combo updater to it while its booted in fw disk mode is a good one.

I have 2 other Macs, but both have are running 10.5.

I have downloaded the combo update it needs separately, but how can i install that if it is in FW disk mode?

Put it (the iMac) in FW disk mode and connect it to another Mac. Run the combo updater and see if it will get far enough for you to choose where to install it. If so, choose the fw disk (your iMac). If the installer doesn't let you progress that far, it will probably tell you you're running a newer OS (10.5), which it's reading from your local Mac. In that case a 10.4 archive-install for your iMac is the next solution.

ok the FW disk mode did not work, I could not select the target drive for the combo update, so i tried archive and install, which was going fine until the iMac shutdown again after about 20 minutes of use.

So now it won't boot at all into the Mac partition. (It has XP on another partition which boots fine)

The main issue it shuts down always after 20 minutes of use or less, perhaps the power supply needs replacing? Its way out of warranty.

I would love to give that a try, but now the mac partition wont boot into OSX anymore as the archive and install did not finish.

Can i try this from the XP partition?

the second part contains the instructions, no OS X necessary:
Unplug all cables from the computer, including the power cord and any display cables.
Wait at least 15 seconds.
Plug the power cord back in, making sure the power button is not being pressed at the time. Then reconnect your keyboard and mouse to the computer.
Press the power button on the back to start up your computer.

The power supply or the logic board is causing grief, so I will have to replace the power supply at least first, as nothing I have tried stops it from shutting down after about 20 minutes of use (once it warms up).

That sounds more like logic board than power supply.

Check your system.log for any errors. Thermal events can cause the computer to shutdown.

Old System log is gone, I was trying to do an archive and install but it kept failing, so i copied the home folder onto another drive to save the documents, then tried a fresh install, but the iMac shutdown again after 20 minutes or so.

Is there anyway i can test the logic board or power supply?

There is no current log, as I have not been able to install OSX again. So there is only a partial install which i can not get to boot.

I'm following you now.

Try putting your other Mac in TDM and booting from its system on this iMac and see what happens. If it shuts off again, you might have something to look for in its system.log.

Art > I was able to boot using TDM as you suggested and it shutdown again after about 30 minutes this time.

The only log i can find with a date close to now is: kextcache_2008-09-07-154305_Macintosh-2.crash

Is this any help? Shall i paste the whole log?

Have you sorted out the shutdown issue yet? If booted from the hardware test disc or Tiger disc does it stay on for multiple hours?

No, it still shuts down after about 20-25 mins of use, regardless of what is happening, the only exception if booted into FW target disk mode, it may stay on for 30-40 mins before shutting down without warning.

Well I would attribute the shutting down to some sort of heat issue, possibly the power supply. Do you know if all the fans are working? What does the Apple Hardware Test say? I think it's pretty fruitless to continue repairing the OS when there seems to be some other serious fault with the machine.

Thermal events usually show up in the system.log. Also, when there is a thermal event, the system usually goes to sleep instead of abruptly powering off. Seanc is correct, this is not an OS issue but a hardware issue since it's occurring while booted from multiple methods. Your plan of attack in replacing the power supply and then the logic board seems to be a sound plan of attack.

I would love to run the AHT, but my friend can not find his original instal disks, and i assume its a different AHT for each Mac running Intel? Or can i use my disks that came with my MBA?

Hmm, it could be different but it's worth a shot.

They are generally compatible with each other. When you might run into a problem is when you try to run an AHT that is older than the Mac that you're testing.
