As the Macbook /Macbook Pros have been refreshed with new CPU, I would hope the Mac Mini will follow suit sometime soon.

I thought the Mini carried similar internals as the Macbook?

While on the subject, does the Mac mini take the same RAM as the MacBook Pro? I've just ordered a new MBP with RAM maxed out meaning I will have two 1GB sticks that could, if possible, in turn double and max out the mini's RAM ... then I'd have two 512MB sticks, and of course the two 256MB sticks the mini came with - which I was told are good for something like ear-rings .

Yes, they take the same RAM. It should be good to switch out...and enjoy your new machine.

As far as the Mac mini refresh, I think it's likely though I haven't seen the usually signs of low availability in our reseller lines. (We tend to order a lot of Mac minis...see the signature.)

But, here's hoping to new Mac minis!

I want a mini with a decent video card and a Blu-Ray burner!

Um...guess I should keep dreaming.

Cool - bonus! The mini is a nice machine for what it is; it could really use a larger, faster hard drive option and better graphics (probably only the newer integrated like the MBs though). I think the one I have has a 4200RPM HD though, at least they got past that with even the current rev!

Yep really looking forward to MBP, so often annoyed at slowness on 1.5GHz 12" PB with opening multiple apps, or even just multiple tabs in Safari!

Hoping for an update soon as well, and with the Airport Express just being updated to wireless-N (as seen on the Swiss Apple site only I think) it would be a good time to add this to the Mini as well.
My Macs: MacBook White C2D, 2.0GHz, 4GB, 120GB 7200rpm HDD
PowerBook 12" 1.33GHz, 1.25GB, 80GB 7200rpm HDD (i bought it but the misses owns it!)
... waiting for new Mac Mini ... want 2.4GHz, 4GB, 200GB 7200rpm HDD ...

A mini update will happen, as Intel seems to be phasing out the older 65 nm laptop CPUs quite quickly, but it's a little early yet.

Minis RULE! My nearly 3 year old PPC runs 24/7 and never lets me down! I'll get a newer one without even thinking about it.

Thanks Apple for keeping the mini!

It is actually the mid range portable in the line up. I was always going to replace my antique 1Ghz 17" G4 Powerbook with another portable at some point.

I still plan to get a mini for home to drive my Dell 2407 display soon, but now there is less urgency as the MBA will fill the gap between work and home needs for now.

Horsepower perhaps, market segment apple is focusing this on, is not the mid range market

That is the short term plan, but its a PITA to unplug and connect again each day when im off to the offarse. So thats why i want to get a Mini to connect to the 2407 and thus leave the MBA to roam wireless and free. (well its the plan, but my plans change daily as you can see )

Original G4 minis are now three years old, so sales of the next model should benefit from those of us who are ready for something newer. The mini has been so solid I can't see buying anything else. Quiet, reliable, energy efficient, it's a great computer.

Ok guys, I need to buy a mini for the office this week, as I have new staff starting.

My question is if i buy this week and a new model is released within the next 14 days, am I able to swap it for the newer model if i buy from the apple store online? Or does it apply to resellers also?

If it is not a build to order model (i.e. not a stock configuration), you can return it to the Apple Store minus a 10% restocking fee if the computer is opened. If it is a custom build-to-order model, you can't return it.

Other resellers may have different policies.

With AppleInsider reporting a redesign of the MacBook coming this summer, I doubt that we'll see a new Mini before then.

Mac mini's are a hot commodity. Buy now if you want one and sell it when you buy a new model. It will go fast. I'm hoping apple puts a quad core chip in one. With Dell and the rest selling quad core systems for around 600 bucks, apple would be well advised to put one in the mini. I wouldn't mind if it grows a bit to help keep it cool.
2010 Mac Mini, 32GB iPod Touch, 2 Apple TV (1)
Home built 12 core 2.93 Westmere PC (almost half the cost of MP) Win7 64.

Mmm, Mini and quad-core in the same sentence. It goes together like Homer and donuts. Seriously, I haven't heard of a quad-core mobile processor, which is what the Mini would need. This would be the perfect opportunity for Apple to come out with the low-end headless Mac that so many of us have wanted, with a quad-core desktop processor. They could call it the MiniMax. As for me, I'll probably buy whatever comes out in the next rev, but a Firewire 800 port that can keep up with the SATA II drives would be sweet.

Yeah, there is no Intel quad-core mobile CPU.

Sometime in September we should see the very first one though: the QX9300. A quad-core 2.53 GHz Penryn with 12 MB L2 cache running on a 1067 MT/s FSB. But with a TDP of 45 W and a 1k price of $1038 I'd be surprised to see this Penryn end up in the mini as we know it today.

The instant the mini's are updated, I'll buy one for my wife to replace her dual 2.5GHz G5. Damn thing sounds like the vacuum cleaner its so loud. Its always been loud which is why I donated it to her as soon as I could get a replacement for myself (1st gen Mac Pro). Pretty freaking scary that the minis are essentially equal in power to that 45lb moster she's got now.

Equal in CPU power, yes.

Graphics performance, disk access/throughput, ports, and expandability are an entirely different story though. If she is interested in any of those the mini will quite possibly not be a suitable replacement.

At this rate, I wonder if Apple will ever update the thing. It's such a bad deal right now. And actually, it has been since it had its price hiked by $100.

Once you factor in the cost of a monitor, keyboard, mouse, and Apple RAM (which is about twice as expensive as if you were to install it yourself, as you could do with a MacBook), you're at $900-$1000. You may as well just get a MacBook for that. You gain portability and it's a little faster too.

"That's Mama Luigi to you, Mario!" *wheeze*

Well I will still be getting a new mini once they are released. I assume a refresh for the cinema displays would launch along side. June 9th perhaps?

Is it possible the Mini will be discontinued? Do other Mac lines normally go 10 months between updates?

I ask because I know someone who fits the Mini user profile and am looking into them for her.

Thanks.

The minis seem to be on a longer update cycle; the last cycle was 11 months.

For the mini this is nothing out of the unusual. Rumors keep saying it will be discontinued, but it never happened.

The Mac mini is just Apple's ultra-lowest end Mac. It basically gets the crumbs that fall down while Apple's hardware engineers eat lunch. It rarely sees updates, usually gets the chipsets other Macs just moved away from and is also rarely advertised. That's just the way it is with the mini. If you want one, buy one. If you want to get one just after it's refreshed, you'll just have to wait, wait, wait.
