So we're less than a month away from the Big Show (Feb. 25). I haven't seen all the Best Picture nominees yet so I can't offer any predictions yet. But I saw "Little Miss Sunshine" on DVD last night and was kind of underwhelmed by it. It was a good film, but not really Oscar-worthy. I still have to see "The Departed" before the show -- the buzz says that seems to be the front-runner right now. Out of the ones I've seen, I'm stuck between "Babel" and "Letters From Iwo Jima" -- both are great films.

Helen Mirren and Forest Whitaker seem to be locks for the big acting awards. I've seen both those films (The Queen and Last King of Scotland) and agree they were outstanding in both. They'll probably win -- which does take some of the suspense out of the show.

So which Oscar contenders have you seen. Who do you think's going to win? (nominees are here)

By the way, for you U.K.-ers, the Baftas (the British Oscars) are tonight. Here in the States a tape-delayed version will be on BBC America tonight. Those nominees are here.

I don't care about the Oscars anymore. They're more political than artistic.

Best picture should be The Departed and Best Director Martin Scorcese

Will his past hant him one more year?

I thought James McAvoy was the real star of The Last King of Scotland and he should have been nominated.

The Queen...meh.

I have to put my thinking cap on for my complete thoughts on the academy awards.

I hope Will Smith wins for his role in The Pursuit of Happyness. I really enjoyed that movie and think he did an excellent job.

I thought it was so depressing.

Just my opinion.

Not worth much.

I haven't seen The Departed yet. Came out today on DVD. Is it as good as some say?

A few of my own thoughts (though it's not like I have an Academy vote):

I agree with the OP that Little Miss Sunshine was underwhelming and I'm still trying to understand what makes this Oscar worthy. The Queen had brilliant acting by Helen Mirren and Michael Sheen, but the movie, as a whole, struck me as very network TV movie type of material. The Departed -- sorry, I preferred the original. Babel and Letters From Iwo Jima are my personal picks, with Letters edging Babel out (perhaps because I saw the latter more recently). I thought Letters (and its companion piece Flags of Our Fathers) was an inspired tribute (aside from one ugly scene) to soldiers -- not Japanese, or American, or WWII, specifically -- but the people who fight in war for whatever reason.

Being in debt and celebrating a lower deficit is like being on a diet and celebrating the fact you gained two pounds this week instead of five.
