NYC has banned the word "******."

A move to fascism, or a good idea?

True, but don't you see this as a first step in that direction?

I see proposing a bill to outlaw the word and punish its use the first step in that direction.

Its going to be a serious crimp in the lives of East coast rappers.
That would take out a good third of their lyrics.

Chris Rock's gonna have a bit of a problem on tour then.
Been inclined to wander... off the beaten track.

Ah - it's a matter of opinion then. I see your bill as the second step, enforcement the third.

I guess there is a postive side to this.

I'm asking what you were expecting other than an opinion.

Right, so I was a little confused why you felt the need to point it out.

Anyway, I guess my vote to the original question is 'neither'

Maybe it's a cultural issue, but I don't quite understand this word banning thing. People are racist, not words. Words are just empty vehicles: if one is not adequate anymore, it will be replaced. As long as racism exists, new vehicles will be made to express it.

As for viewing this ban just as a symbolic sign, I actually think this ban does nothing but give "******" a stronger, more powerful meaning. Since it is considered an offensive word -and as such not used colloquially- further restricting its use (in a compulsory or non compulsory way) will strengthen its impact when uttered. The only way I see this as symbolic is just to acknowledge a social problem, but doing nothing to solve it (even maybe by making it worse).

I think all this political correctness behavior en up strengthening the problems it -supposedly- is meant to solve. As an Argentine (native of Buenos Aires), political correctness is something that have always stroke me. There is no such a thing here. If someone -anyone- is a little 'tinted', he'll instantly be called "el negro"; a jew, "el ruso" (many jewish immigrants had russian surnames); any asian, disregarding his origins, "el chino", and so on. Such things are never offensive in any way, and are not taken as being offensive when said colloquially. Nevertheless those nicknames can be used in an offensive way but, again, the meaning is in the person and not in the word.
I strongly believe this word banning is no other thing that a way to dissociate the people from the problem and attach it to the words instead; a very perverse mechanism in my opinion.

Y no entienden nada... ¡y cómo se divierten!...

Man, this is being posted a lot lately:

That's why he's gonna kill us. So we got to beat it. Yeah. Before he let's loose the marmosets on us."

I thought insults were protected under the 1st.
But states do have the right to disreguard the bill of rights.

NY should ban ALL dispareging words while they're at it.
Redneck, cracker, spook, gook, etc...
All men are created equal, but what they do after that point puts them on a sliding scale.

I'm sure they'll be a loophole for rappers and comedians.

Dave Chappell had that covered with the "N*gger Family." Funny as hell.
