Ok, I downloaded the new iTunes and subscribed to iTunes Match. All my music was cataloged, matched and the remainder uploaded. Then I turned on iTunes Match on my iPhone. Now I have DUPLICATE copies of tracks appearing all over the place. One copy has a little cloud with a downward pointing arrow and the other one doesn't when I press play both tracks play but the one that used to have a cloud loses that icon.

What is happening here? I didn't see anything about deleting music from the iPhone before turning on iTunes match???

Still no idea where the duplicates came from but it stabilized with only certain albums duplicated. I have recovered by manually deleting the duplicates but the trick is to delete the one without the cloud next to it. Still no idea why it started duplicating though.

Can't help but think 'minor inconvenience' would be more accurate than 'disaster' in this instance. Disaster would be having your local music library irrecoverably wiped out.

Seems odd that Apple would expect you to delete music from your phone and only ever use streaming. Not really very practical.
I have plenty of more important things to do, if only I could bring myself to do them....

Isn't Match still in beta? If so, it shouldn't be judged like a full release, yet.

Have you ever asked Apple support? Never meet the similar situation here.

The beta disappeared, now you pay to subscribe to it. (But as we all know with Apple's online services, much like Google, it's still very much in beta)

Ah okay. It will be interesting to see if this is this is intended or is a bug, and if the latter how widespread it will be.

Thanks for reminding me that I should clear up the 3200 duplicates (according to iTunes) in my library before I subscribe to this.

How do you have that many duplicates? I barely have 3,200 tracks!

Lots of compilations, best of albums, podcasts freebies, festival samplers, etc. that give me multiple versions of the same track. Also, iTunes is just wrong about at least a couple hundred of those.
I have 31,000 tracks. But a fair number of those are sound fx, which I should probably just take out if they're going to have a hard 25K limit for this service.

How long until someone figures out a way to trick iTunes and iTunes Match and get songs for free?

Most likely never (except maybe in some nerdy movie).
