I noticed pictures have been getting resized in threads?

Can we finally post any size picture and the forum software will automatically resize it?

This is probably mentioned somewhere else in the news of the changes, but I was getting a little light headed reading all of those threads. Sorry.

Yes, the software will auto-resize and post a thumbnail with a link to click and see the full-size picture. Check out some thread with pictures to see it in action (or you can post a pic in here to test).

I thought the image size rule was still in effect, and the resizing was just to stop rule-breakers from inconveniencing everybody else. So the rule has been changed?

How exactly is the image resized? Does it happen on the local computer after the full size image has been downloaded, or is a copy of the image resized and hosted on the macnn servers? I thought one of the advantages of smaller images is the faster download and subsequent page loading. Although I guess with broadband so prevalent the point is mostly moot.

Thanks for the answer. It seemed like the full size image was being downloaded.

It was a large picture I had on my server indicating detail quality of a lens I had. Some people would find that picture very beautiful and invaluable.

More so than any picture of someone's 1337 powerbook setup with 4 dell extended desktop monitors and non-mathcing speaker system. But I acknowledge than someone would find that beautiful.

Just been in a thread with pictures, and it looks like it only resizes wide pictures, not deep ones, any way to auto resize a deep picture?

It'll be much easier if you just comply.

Concur. Maybe keep the image warning requirement in thread title to let folks know it'll take a while for download?

all the image requirements remain.
the resizer just helps reduce the annoyance of a broken layout for the times when people use oversized images.

It would be nice to be able to turn this off in a thread that very explicitly says [THERE ARE LARGE/MONSTROUS JPEGS IN THIS THREAD] in the title. It's annoying to have to hit the resize button for every picture..

Maybe not every picture.... But sometimes I don't visit a picture thread for a while and I do enlarge quite a few. I like to see the bigger pictures. These old eyes ain't what they used to be.

I think if you are going to link to any 10.2 meg photo, it should at least be a decent photo. The one of the trees is not worth the bandwidth, even if you were just testing the lens.

I have a whole series of pictures just like it. Would you like me to email them to you?

Yea, like posting a stupid picture so it takes minutes to load the page. If that isn't derailing the thread, it sure as heck does a pretty good job of killing it.

Here is a tip, re-save the image with a little more compression the next time you want to test something. There is simply no excuse for a 10meg file here in this thread.

Do you have any concept of what this thread is about?!?! I asked about a new feature and a mod asked me to try it out with a large image. I posted the largest one on my server and then you went weirdo.

I do respect that demonhood removed the link to the pic, as the link served its purpose.

I am the thread starter. You are the derailer. Sheesh.

And thanks for the insulting comment about the picture BTW.

I have JavaScript off, and was just exposed to a hideously oversized image in another thread, because the poster seemed to operate on the assumption that it was no longer his responsibility to resize the image himself.

JavaScript sucks, people shouldn't be expected to have it on. And if the full picture gets loaded anyway, the resizing trick is stupid beyond belief.

I think it's a good temp measure until a mod can go and remove the oversized pic.

I guess if demonhood agreed with the usefulness of the photo it would not have been deleted. I think the same test could have been accomplished with much smaller file.

I am sorry I "insulted" your photo. Can we get over it now? I was much more annoyed by the delay due to excessive file size. Hence my comments on such.

Browsing the Web without Javascript is like refusing to upgrade from System 7. I will say that browsers should offer more fine control over Javascript to prevent sites abusing it, but I mean, it makes possible awesome things like Google Maps and other AJAX-driven controls.

I was going to address his post and then just thought: "Hey, if he wants to severely limit his web browsing experience, who am I to rain on his parade (albeit sheltered and lame)?"

Yes, that is why your image was removed but the other one was not. You went a little overboard in selecting an image. Unlike you I am NOT taking this seriously. But it is entertaining.
