I took this picture about an hour ago while trying out my Sigma 2X convertor with my Canon 200mm f/2.8L on my Rebel XTi. I can't wait for a full moon. With crop factor, that makes it the equivalent of a 640mm lens.

Nice pic. I'm seeing a little motion blur. Was this shot hand held, or was that earth rotation during long exposure?

It is probably from the shutter shaking my tripod. I had the legs fully extended and it was placed on grass. The shutter was about 1/30th of a second, so it is certainly not Earth rotation. When the moon is full I will take one with the tripod on cement and with the legs as short as possible. At 640mm, the teeniest shakes are extremely magnified. Also, this is a crop of a much larger image.

The original picture was actually slightly yellow. I de-saturated the image and fiddled with the levels to clear up the craters and other debris marks. This picture was taken in town and only one lot down from a street lamp. If I headed out into the country, with a lot less light pollution I could probably get a pretty good image. Can't wait for camping next month.

Nice to see my fanbio could roll his bones and could make it. Hi atomic rooter!

I wish I could make it where you click on that image and a picture of cheese comes up. Maybe a nice Lorraine Swiss.

You might want to lock the mirror up as well. Good shooting!

Are you using one of those cool cable shutter releases? Or a timer? Or did you press the button yourself?

Nice shot, what was your shutter speed?

What I found when shooting the moon was to use my remote control so my touching the camera would not introduce any vibration and use a fairly short exposure time, plus make sure my tripod is sturdy and there's little wind.

Also it does appear to be a little blurry, which could if you used a long exposure as the rotation would have caused the blurriness but then I wonder if the softness was a result of the teleconverter..

From the EXIF data:
Exposure Time 0.04s (1/25)
Aperture f/8.0
ISO 200

It is a crop of the full image. So that will cause a little bit of the blurriness as well. I should also pick up a remote.

No, I need to get a remote shutter release. I pressed the shutter myself, but I tried to introduce as little shake as possible.

Next time try a timer. It should remove any vibration caused by your hand.

I thought the mirror blocked out all light from the eye piece. I will try this as well.

It is deceiving, I actually took this while it was still light out. I messed with the levels to get the black background and also de-saturated the image to make it black and white. The only other object I could see in the sky at the time I took it was Jupiter. Also, I am in town and light pollution blocks viewing of the stars until well after the sun has set.

Nice shot but needs to be sharper.

At this focal length and shutter speed, you ideally need to use a remote or the built in timer in the camera plus mirror lockup.

What happens is that when the mirror kicks back to expose the shutter and then the sensor, it sends a vibration through the body. One wouldn't think it would be such a huge thing but it really can effect shots like this. Mirror lock up on the XTi is probably in the custom functions section. If you put it on the timer drive mode, the mirror will lock up when you press the shutter button and then 2 seconds later, it will take the shot and return the mirror.

Give it a go!

Railroader, your image is a bit blurry. My suggestion would be to use some kind of remote shutter release. I hope you will take my idea into consideration.

Seriously you guys, now I have to apologize to my wife for waking up my kids. Yes, I laughed that hard. My little boy is crying because I woke him up.

I just wish it was less cloudy outside so I could take some pictures of the moon.

If I could only figure out how to make sure it won't be blurry...

There are a few ways to remedy this. The first would be using a delay between trigger and the camera taking the picture. You can also buy a remote shutter trigger for the XT also.

If you combine one of these with the mirror lock feature, you can prevent the majority of the camera shake. Check out page 91 of the manual. (It's in settings, mirror lock-up, enable).

Best of luck!

thats nice.

cool idea: you could hook the camera up to your computer, and make a picture of the moon every night for a couple of months, and make a moon-time-lapse. (teh snappy)
