i'm too lazy to critique well, but quite a few nice pics. Here's a few I've taken recently that I think are interesting. P&S Sony with dust in the lens. : \

Driving on overpass from 595E to I-95N looking at downtown Fort Lauderdale.

Taken the same day, a bit of calm after the storm. Fort Lauderdale Beach.

Nice sky in the backyard. Papaya tree is my neighbor's.

Oh, and ca$h's "tips" in this thread are retarded.

Trying to resurrect the photography talk in here...

Here are a few shots I took of my wife in our backyard last Saturday. I'm trying to build up a portfolio so I can start advertising a bit, and my wife was one of my first subjects...

I know you guys have the ability to be brutally honest, so tell me what you think I can do differently to get more out of these shots.

I like the first and the third shots.

The first photo is really nice because the fence isn't distracting, and I really like how you can't see her hat.

The second photo is nice, but I feel that the fence is too distracting in this one and because it's higher than your wife her hat stands out far too much. Her hat becomes this solid black object that, in my opinion, draws your attention away from the rest of the photo; especially if your eyes move towards her face. The chair, and the light on it, is great, but I don't feel that the wooden fence background works well with the chair.

The third photo is great. Nothing more to say, great photo.

There's something about the fourth photo which I'm just not crazy about. The subject and lighting are very nice, but I think the dulled colours just don't work with me.

All in all, I think you did a great job.

a few of my "keepers" I haven't edited any of them, and I have recently recieved Aperture, so any tips to a novice would be great. thanks in advance

ps, in the last picture, I had my zoom lense on, and the darkening in the corners is due to the main main lense being retracted a lil to much

I tried Aperture for a while, but fell in love with Lightroom, which I use exclusively now for photo organization. It provides most of the editing tools I need, too, but you can click Cmmd+E and it sends the picture straight to Photoshop. Pretty cool stuff.

First off, thank you very much for the feedback.

Now that you've pointed out some things about picture #2, it's opened up a bit to me. I never liked it quite as much as the first, and didn't really know why. I think you're right about the fence in the back.

I goofed around a bit too much with picture #4. I eventually got to a point where I thought, you know, that looks pretty cool like that. After I uploaded it to Flickr, I went back and looked at the original. I should have just added a bit of vignette and pumped up the colors a bit, rather than the other way around.

You and me both. I love Lightroom for the same reasons. I really is like being back in a darkroom, but without the hassle and cost involved.

That's not the house, that's the shed.

The house is behind me, the view is from the kitchen porch. Yes, it's a beautiful property and we were lucky to stumble across it. We're in the middle of Mennonite country, so many horse drawn carts and lots of farm fresh produce all through summer.

You know that guy? That particular stunt has always kind of freaked me out a bit.

That would be the Space Cowboy. He does a lot of crap and has quite a few world records. He is able to swallow longer swords than most due to an internal deformation medically known as congenital division of the stomach. He's also famous for swallowing swords under water... with sharks.

His coolest trick is swallowing a balloon (which cuts off his airflow), then swallowing a sword, popping it inside him, finishing off with fishing it out with a pair of long pliers.

My buddy just got this a couple of months ago, I snapped a couple of pics of it. There were dumpy cars in front of and behind it, that's why the pics are a little oddly cropped.

Before I comment, please keep in mind that I have very little photography experience and have no idea what I'm talking about. All my opinions are just that, opinions. I'm just voicing what the picture makes me feel.

I love the composition of the first picture. The colors are really warm and inviting, which I also like. The only touch up I might do would be to de-saturate the sky a bit, it's too blue for me; the rest of the picture is so warm, the sky seems overly cool.

I don't care for the second picture all that much. The shadow created by the wheel well makes the front tire seem turned, and not turned, at the same time... which is kind of interesting, but it's distracting me. As you mentioned, the cropping is a wee bit too close on the front end.

Anyway, what the heck do I know? Here's my first contribution to this thread:

Sorry to hear that. The pup in that picture also passed away last summer. I really like your photo - the fact that the dog is looking right at you is nice, I wish I could see the entire body though. Did you shoot it in black & white? It's hard to tell

If there was something kind of to the right, behind the dog, that was bright and colorful I think it could be a really neat effect. Perhaps a dog toy or something.

Whoa, Arena, I didn't know you were Sergio. I'm not sure how I missed that. My wife and I are huge fans of your pictures. I swear she's told me, "I like your portraits better than I used to, but that Sergio guy's pictures have that cool, gritty look; you need to figure out how to do that, cause they're a lot cooler than yours."

Just aquariums, through the glass. The shot of the tall aquarium with the fish in it is when you walk into the Monterey Bay Aquarium. It is truly stunning to see in person.

just sitting in a recently burned out car poses more health risk than smoking. There is so much that is bad for you.

Heres a tidbit of cool info...If a car is burning the smoke is toxic but not as toxic as the unburned particles and hydrocarbons.
