So I use the column view in the finder.
If I select a .avi file to drag it to a new folder or something, Quicktime tries to load a preview of the file in the next column. Which it can't. I get an error and it slows everything down because quicktime checks the server for software updates...
Is there any way I can make quicktime not try to load .avi previews?

Sure, download VLC, and set VLC to be the default player on all .avi files...
Fixed.

2 things may help
1) Click the arrow on the preview window. The finder will no longer preview multimedia and graphic files.
2) Download and install FFusion. This is a plug in that allows Quicktime to view most .avi files (log out or finder relaunch required)
3) As mentioned above download VLC or MPlayer, both are much better media players than Quicktime.

Sorry, I may have been unclear.
I have VLC already, the problem was the preview. So yes, clicking that little arrow helped.
Thanks.

VLC will play the .avi preview just fine if you set VLC as the default app on all .avi files...

FFusion won't speed up Apple's avi parser any, but DivX comes with it's own avi parser that overrides Apples (for divx/mp3 avi files) and is much faster. Add the extras for compatibility with more files (xvid, ac3)

Incorrect. this is a OS feature. VLC cannot 'tap' into that.
