I have an intel MacBook that is over a couple years old now and it has been a great machine, which is why i decided to get it a new battery and upgrade to Leopard this year instead of upgrading my computer. But, I have had leopard installed for over a month now, and today it started acting up.

When I close the lid to put the computer to sleep, it doesn't go to sleep, and when I open it back up and I get an error saying the OS X has unexpectedly quit and needs to restart instructing my to hold down the boot button.

It only seems to happen when I am on battery power, but I'll verify that next time I plug it up. I have AppleCare through July this year, so I may be giving them a call but I wanted to check to see if this was a common problem first. Thanks...

Did you upgrade the RAM? If you have the original RAM sticks, put them back and see if the issue persists.

i did, about a year ago. I'll try to find the old sticks, but could bad RAM cause this?

FWIW...just checked and the RAM status is "ok" in the system profile

another update...

I just tried putting it to sleep via the apple menu and it went to sleep and woke up with no problem.
I also tried closing the lid with the AC adapter plugged in and it slept/woke up with no problem.

Could it be related to my 2 week old battery??

It's possible that the battery could cause problems, but definitely a weird issue. Since you have AppleCare, I recommend either calling Apple or making an appointment at an Apple store (if possible) to get it documented. Just be sure to make a backup of your data if you haven't already

I think it's a pretty good possibility that since you are having problems only when on battery power that your new battery may be to blame.

Is this an official Apple battery? Used? Refurbed? If you still have your old battery (unless it died), try it and see how it behaves without AC.

Do you get any relevant error messages at the time of the sleep/wake/crash in the All Messages log when you view it in Console (in your /Applications/Utilities folder - note, you'll need to be running as an admin to see everything in the log)?

it's a brand new official Apple battery. I usually do get error reports which I have "sent" in to apple, but they never really meant anything to me. I'll call AppleCare and see what they have to say... thanks
