Just wondering if anyone has played WoW on one of the new iBooks. If so, does it play/run well or not. 32MB VRAM just doesn't seem enough.

I have played WoW on a G4 933Mhz ibook with a Radeon 9200 32MB videocard in it. Runs great even in 1024x768. My buddy (just to see what happened) installed it on an older ibook clamshell 366mhz SE indigo with a Rage 128 8MB card. IT RAN! Of course we are talking 3 FPS at its peak, but hell it ran! So as for the new iBooks I would think it will run great.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for the input. I'm kinda going back and forth in my head on whether to save some cash with an iBook or go for broke with a PowerBook. The price tag on the iBook is so appealing. I'm so sick of my Windows XP laptop. I got called into work last night due to that virus issue and spent hours today updating servers and my laptop.

I don't think the current powerbooks are worth the money. get the ibook. if in a year, you're still not happy, look at powerbooks then. Maybe they'll have centrino by then.

Go with the iBooks, the Powerbooks are just plain overpriced right now for what you get.

Has anyone actually played WoW on the current generation iBooks (one's with the ATI 9550)? My TiBook has the 64mb Radeon 9000, and it's not too bad. I know the 9550 is a much better card, but it only has 32mb of VRAM, and that really, really worries me. I saw some benchmarks with UT2004 and the iBook turned a whopping 13FPS... So, if anyone actually PLAYS WoW on this machine, I would be greatly interested in finding out how it runs.

Thanks!!

You should check out the benchmarks. The 12" iBook is within 5% of the 12" PB.

right now I wouldn't go with a 12" pb over the 12" ibook, wait until they refresh the powerbooks, the 12" definately needs a video upgrade(my guess is still 64mb but with the ati 9550 or 9600)

I got my 1.2Ghz PB on ebay for half the cost of a new one. Works great, runs great. You could probably find some good deals on ibooks too. No sense in paying full price for something thats going to change platform a year from now..

I tried WoW on my spanking new 12" iBook 1.33Ghz with stock config. WoW was totally unplayable. Even with all eyecandy turned off it was unbareably slow.

I would not buy an new iBook for gaming. For all other purposes, however

Thanks for the input. I wouldn't play all the time just when on trips or check stuff while at work (via dial-up). But I think I'm going to wait for next Power Book release. I have other tools I use like Photoshop and Lightwave.

Thanks again,

J.

That's funny, I was just playing it 2 weeks ago and I got 30+ FPS in ironforge and 50+ outside and in the instances. I hardly call that unplayable.

Perhaps WoW and Mac OS X (open GL), has been updated a zillion times, since the Aasmundo wrote here 1 year ago.

Just a thought though.

Still had to be said, just think if anyone else read this with it unsaid they would think the game was unplayable

hehe sure thing!

It is only unplayable to the point of view of the person who plays it

I just have to say my oppinion about Mac´s and Games, and that is that they don´t tag along well, since the market is so small for the mac, that the developers dosen´t give a horse a$$ about how "well" and how "optimized" it is for mac. Beside Blizzard though, bless you! (And give us a freakin´ Warcraft III UB patch ).

So if anyone is listening! GET A PC NOTEBOOK if you want to be portable and have a muuuch greater experience with games, at a lower cost. If you want a cool toy, and use the awesome Mac OS X, make the sacrifice with low low low FPS, and few few few games.

I could have bought a Mac Pro, with X1900xt and the works, but I know how I can´t resist to install Windows XP, and then im back on track game-a-holic "must complete" the last games I have missed for the last 3 years I have had a Mac and not PC.

The Lure of games! Im glad I can´t play anything (compared to the PC world) on my Macbook
