Okay.. So I dropped my iPod from 20' (don't ask.) The drive worked for a few minutes then got to bad sectors where the impact pushed the heads into the platters. Anyhoo, it's a 40 gig and about 6 months out of warranty. So I did the next best thing... I ordered a Toshiba 40 gig drive off of ebay, stuck it in, attached it to the computer to restore it and... it won't read the new drive.
I booted the iPod into it's self testing state and the drive (and everything else for that matter) passed. I just need some way to format the drive so it will mount on my computer. Disk utility, disk warrior, and the Apple Genius were all no help.
So I turn to you guys for help. Thanks in advanced!

At Apple, we had an adaptor that let you attach 1.8" iPod drives to standard 2.5" laptop drive connectors. That way, you could put the iPod drive in a standard Firewire hard drive case. I have no idea if such adaptors are commercially available, however. I would think they would be cheap, though.

I was at the apple store and the guy had no clue. I suggested he do a dd from another 40 gig iPod but he was even confused at that...
