A colleague has a problem with an older Geforce card, which suddenly shows solid red lines across the display (and refuses to boot to Windows, but that may not be related). The card is from the generation that is known to have problems with bad bumps, as the 8600M cards in many Macbook Pros of the same era. Does anyone with that problem have any experiences to share? Does it sound like a potential bumpgate problem?
The new Mac Pro has up to 30 MB of cache inside the processor itself. That's more than the HD in my first Mac. Somehow I'm still running out of space.

Is it an 8800 by any chance?

The Apple ones were prone to bad caps and bad caps can definitely cause red lines like that. Used to see it on the G5 iMacs a lot.
I have plenty of more important things to do, if only I could bring myself to do them....

No, it's a shitty 9500 GS OEM pack-in. I guess bad caps is a possibility, too, will have to check that, but anyway we need a new GPU.

Apparently people have had some joy baking the 8800s too.

Turns out that wasn't that card at all, wasn't even Geforce. A Radeon 4850 which seems to have let the magic smoke out of the VRMs. Never mind.
