I've got an Alu. iMac in a lab that has a corrupted HFS+ journal. Whenever the disk is mounted, the OS kernel panics when trying to read the journal. This occurs in Safe Boot, booted from an Install disc, or mounted on another Mac via TDM. Both Leopard and Tiger will KP when attempting to mount this disk.

I've run AHT and ASD on it and it passes all tests. I ran the ASD drive test in a loop for several days and it never failed testing the disk. So, I don't think it's a hardware problem with the disk.

The only way I can get anywhere with this Mac is to be booted in SUM. However, diskutil is not available in SUM. So, I need a way to be able to format the disk without mounting it first.

Any ideas? I really don't want to have to do a service call for what is just a software issue.

But newfs_hfs should be. Just use that (but make sure you enter the right /dev entry so you don't end up formatting the wrong drive!).

Ticking sound coming from a .pkg package? Don't let the .bom go off! Inspect it first with Pacifist. Macworld - five mice!

Are you trying to salvage the disk, or information on the disk? If you just want to salvage the disk, boot the iMac in Target Disk Mode and connect it to a Linux or Win box. Reformat, then use the Install disk and reformat again to HFS+.

If you want to salvage data from the disk, that one is a harder question.

He's already mentioned having tried Target Disk Mode.

DiskWarrior *might* help in that case?

He mentioned TDM to another Mac, which would try to mount the defective volume. A Linux or Win box would not trip over the same issues. And once it was reformatted, the Mac could then handle the drive and reformat to HFS+.

I don't care about data. Unfortunately, I don't have a PC with FireWire. I could try it with Boot Camp.

First, however, I'll try CharlesS' suggestion. Time to read the man page on newfs_hfs. I'll let you know how it works when I'm back at work on Monday.

Thanks for all the suggestions.

Using newfs_hfs while booted in SUM from a Leopard DVD did the trick. I wasn't sure which /dev/disk was the internal drive so I tried both listed. Since one was the DVD, no harm could happen if I chose the wrong one.

This is the first time in seven years of supporting OS X that I've ever come across a filesystem so screwed up that it crashes anything it touches.

Thanks everyone.
