I was looking at allof the icon sets that are out there and was thinking that how could someone do something different. Here is 1 idea I had. Do a sort of holographic representation as to what type of icon it is, while haveing the traditional folder or drive icon below it.

The thing is, it may be unusable. The symbol would totally be lost in white, and is questionable on lighter colors.

So I ask, what do you think?

If I take the time to do this, I will be trying to get this done in the same timeframe as DarkStar. ( I have some new stuff, but I am going to only post real screens of it. i.e. some that i put together in themepark. . .)

You don't hear this alot, but be brutally honest. I can take it, and I know where you live. . .

ha.

Best, Hal!

Cool, just remember that most people don't have their icons in full size all the time.

I like it, but I can see problems with column view.

Edit: NS beat me to it.

Looks neat, but I'm not sure how usable/clickable they'd be. This makes sense for some types of icons, but not so much for others.

The general concept is cool though. As I understand it, two applications, for example, would have the same "base," but different holograms? Is that right?

very, very nice, and the column problem is easily sorted, when the icon is reduced below 48x48, drop the drive or the folder part and only display the projected glyph, but fill the space and keep the glow. Oh, and it is possible to make the entire icon clickable even in the empty space, by playing with your alpha channels. Don't be dissuaded I think this set will be great.

I have been trying something similar but mine is in 3d hoops like when you transported in stargate.

Looking great. I like the blue, but maybe a few color variations would be interesting. Seems like a darker color would be better on the lighter backgrounds.

FS, I give you the award for the most useless post. Who cares about the name? Oh ya... Sera... I wont bring that up now though...

I think this is a fantastic and very original idea. I love (semi) dark themes and desktop pics so they would suit me down to the ground.

Nice work fella.

Love it.

But if you release this set, you must do a sub-set with Star Wars Holograms being projected. Leia, Vader, Obi-wan, etc.

I love the idea.. I presume the projections will be for different types of folders/drives(/discs?) such as Firewire HDDs, USB HDDs, Apps folder - or will they all have projections?

Nice job (and nifty idea).

And fireside should have the award for most annoying person on this board.

And his signature is actually awarded the ugliest signature yet.

Wow guys. I am surprised to hear that the idea that I had bouncing around my head may be something desirable.

To be perfectly honest, I enjoy making the icons more than making themes. So with that, I will make an agressive move to create some base icons for both drives and folders and even maybe applications.

Cody, the inspiration for this came directly from your post. I was thinking about the first time I saw Lea on the hologram when I thought of this.

I am going to modify it a bit more to make it seem slightly more degraded. but usability is still key to me. I will see what I can do.

Also, someone mentioned that this can go so many other directions, that once I get a base amount of icons available, I will make the files open source for those that may want to create their own icons off of this, they can.

I would love to see a vader icon, but I won't make one. Who will?

Anyways, I will get to work on this.

I will post an update as soon as I have it.

Thanks guys. All the best, Hal!

P.S. in honor of Fireside's constructive post's, the icon set will officially be named HOLO.CONS.

fireside... you are honestly the biggest dick that i have seen on the many many boards i frequent. you one.. either need to get a life, a girlfriend, a boyfriend, or something that you can spend a little time with other than being that ass that you are.
get out and experience life a little. you really need too... and do it soon, because if this is the way you think you can talk to people, you will end up dead.. with a big fat whole in your head.
life has enough assholes... we really don't need another....
peace to those that don't just want to strike down others with there negativity.

whoopee, the Himalayan hamburger flipper strikes again

Just make a bit of a name for yourself mate, and the burger flipper will be up for a wee bit of nob polishing and brown nosing.

i kind of agree with fireside on these icons name. actually...i don't care for the icons themselves, either. the HD portion looks kind of stupid, IMO, and although i hate halo, i think they may look nicer with a not so "bold" halo symbol. the glowing is nice though...

o and i like fireside's sig pic

Just to comment on the design of the drive itself, this design idea was meant to compliment the theme I am working on called DarkStar. In the theme, there is a cut in the top of the screen that is a very bold, shiny black.

I may redo it to get rid of the black, but I just go with my gut on those types of things. . .

But enough talk. I will be creating a list and create a first batch of these icons.

Best, Hal!

what, am i supposed to be offended? the only person you're offending is the person who made it (not me!), and i'm pretty sure the dude who made it is a lot better than you in illustrator.

if u do make 'em and have spare time, any shot we can have other colors too instead of just blue (so we can match our shapeshifter without changing icons =P

This is what I get...

"This person is on your Ignore List. To view this post click [here]" when he posts.

It's kind of stupid, I would have hoped not to get anything but hey, I can't complain.
