I saw some kid do this a while ago, but I don't even know where to start. . .

On an iBook, this kid was controlling a PC box under is desk over the network.

A new window with the PC shown and everything.

Anyone know how to do this?

Thanks guys.

Best, Hal!

Well, you could snag Remote Desktop Client for OSX from Microsoft....and set up remote desktop on the pc, if you're using windows...the client's actually pretty decent.

If the pc is not running windows, or if you don't wanna use RD, look into something called VNC...it'll even allow you to control the pc from within a web browser!

VNC is generally easier to set up. It's not the most efficient protocol, but it should get the job done if you just need a quick solution.

A couple of things to keep in mind: If you are going to use Microsoft's Remote Desktop Client your windows box will have to be WindowsXP Pro (not the home edition) or one of their server OS's running Terminal Server (if you are running it, you would know it). If you are not running these OS's (or that service) then you still have two options:

Timbuktoo - a very good product with a lot of services beyond just serving as a window into the other computer. But one that does cost money.

VNC - a simple window, but open source so there are free client and server packages for almost every current OS out there (note that MacOS 9 is not "current" for this conversation... there you only have a client). An example server for Windows is RealVNC, and I use ChickenOfTheVNC on MacOS X.

Personally I would go for Microsoft's Remote Desktop Client if possible, and then VNC as the backup, unless there are linux/Solaris/etc boxes involved, then it would be VNC all the way.

Wow, tons of great info.

Thanks guys. you rock!

The MS solution seems pretty much like the way to go. I am working for a huge company, so I am almost certain that they have this network on one of those MS solutions.

If not, I will look at the VNC.

Again, thanks guys.

H!

You could try the following as well:

www.gotomypc.com

though it looks that whilst you can control the PC from a Mac via a web browser, you cann't access a Mac....

Also if price is important then 11.99/month is a lot.

I use MS Remote Desktop on my local network, and GoToMyPC for a few clients when I do consulting work for them. I have to say I'm very impressed by GoToMyPC--it's the only solution that works across multiple firewalls, especially when the client doesn't have a clue how to open ports on their firewall.
I do not like those green links and spam.
I do not like them, Sam I am.

Actually there is/was a Mac OS 9 version of the server. It was pretty awful though. I gave up on it, because it kept crashing the Mac OS 9 box, after which you then had to go to the box physically to restart it anyway. Mac OS 9 memory management really was attrocious (non-existent!).

I use RealVNC at home and love it. I have a headless Wintel box that I use to push music to my home stereo and use Chicken of the VNC as my Mac client to connect to it. Very cool, very easy to install and setup.
